Robles sets World record in Ostrava

Cuban sensation Dayron Robles highlighted competition Thursday with his World record in the men's 110-meter hurdles at the Golden Spike Grand Prix in Ostrava, Czech Republic.

Just 21 years old, Robles is now the man to beat in the men's 110m hurdles heading into the 2008 Olympic Games after setting a world record in that event, running 12.87 seconds. This will put added pressure on reigning Olympic and World champion Liu Xiang, whose previous World record of 12.88 was set in Lausanne, Switzerland in 2006. Two-time Olympic silver medalist Terrence Trammel finished second in 13.21.

2008 World Indoor silver medalist Candice Davis was first out of the blocks in the women's 100m hurdles and led through the first eight hurdles but a clipped hurdle allowed 2008 World Indoor champion Lolo Jones to overtake Davis at the end and win the race in 12.68 to Davis' runner-up 12.79.

Reigning Olympic and two-time World Outdoor champion Jeremy Wariner dominated his inaugural attempt at the men's 300m, crossing the finish line in 31.72 seconds. In the women's 400m, 2007 NCAA 100m runner-up and 200m third-place finisher Ebonie Floyd took the runner-up position in 51.44 behind reigning World champion Christine Ohuruogu of Great Britain, who won in 51.06.

Two-time World Outdoor 200m medalist John Capel claimed the third place position in both the 100m (10.27) and the 200m (20.71). World 100m record holder Usain Bolt of Jamaica won the men's 200m in a world-leading 19.83.

2008 U.S. Indoor champion Michael Rodgers also completed a sprint double, finishing fourth in the 100m in 10.30 and seventh in the 200m in 20.92. Hurdler Terrence Trammell came back after his first race to finish eighth in the open 100m in 10.48 in attempt to prepare for the rounds at the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team Trials - Track & Field.

The meeting opened with a World record in the women's One Hour Run. Tire Tune of Ethiopia covered 18,517 meters in 60 minutes, adding 177m to the previous record of 18,340m set by Tegla Loroupe 10 years ago in Borgholzhausen, Germany.
