Day 1 Highlights

Big Throws | Hoffa, Cantwell and Nelson make the finals with one throw in the shot put. surprised?

Eugene sends its first 3 | Flanagan finally faces Goucher on a track, battled it out from start to finish. The duo held together side by side through the first two miles. Flanagan moved forward 13:40 into the 10k but Kara and a pack of 3 kept pace. It was Flanagan, Goucher, and Begley with 14 laps to go. 16:10.64 was the official mark half way though with the 3-some of Flanagan, Goucher, and Begley extending a 20m distance on the second pack. Begley looked much stronger than her showing at Border Duels in May.

Former Bear | Alysia Johnson is hurt and misses making the Womens 800m finals, finishing just 25th overall during qualifying. On the track to race for the first time in 22 days after being scratched from the NCAA meet with a sore right foot, Johnson faded from near the front of her quarterfinal race in the final 150 meters.

Texas & Oregon | Hernandez and Wheating believe working together is their best shot at moving forward. The two were in the same Heat 3 on Friday night of qualifying in the Mens 800m.

Coaching Winners | Alberto Salazar sends two to Beijing, three to trials finals. Kara Goucher wowed the home crowd finishing second behind Shalane Flanagan. Begley dials a great performance to grab the Olympic Qualifying time, a PR, and third place. Adam Goucher places 5th in 5k Heat 1, and will find himself a spot in the finals Monday night. Galen Rupp sits in the back early, lears the pack late,and adds a thumbs up to take 1st in the Mens 5k Heat 2. Rohatinsky also advances with his 13:56.94 qualifying time for Monday night.

Weather | Eugene weather was hot and humid most of the evening with a late breeze lasting through sunset. The Eugene08 festival, which is behind held adjacent to Hayward and simulcasting all the events, was packed despite the weather.

Brush Fire | Eugene Fire and Police responded to a fire that erupted near the Autzen bridge around 130PM in the afternoon. The bike route affected serves many fans who commute over the Willamette River to attend the games.

Great Things Happening | Many exciting events going on tomorrow include the second installment of the "Distance Legends" series at the Eugene Running Company. Admission is free of charge and Wes Santee will be the storyteller on Saturday morning from 10-12PM. Santee will also autograph his book.
