Under Armour The Freshman/FloFrosh Update
Under Armour The Freshman/FloFrosh Update

As you know, last week we counted down the top pre-season freshmen in the NCAA. Now, the season is really underway and we will be looking at some of the top freshman performances in Division I from the weekend. Those frosh that are really putting themselves on that UA Freshman/FloFrosh Award Watchlist. So let's get right into it with the meets that saw some sweet super-froshie action...
The big news of the weekend came from Griak where N.C. State freshman Laura Hoer surprised a stacked field to take the win. With a time of 20:38 over 6k, Hoer outlasted runner-up Stephanie Price of Minnesota who was 2 seconds back as well as, the rest of the most competitive women's field of the week, which included NCAA 10k runner-up Betsy Saina and American Junior Steeple Record Holder Shelby Greany. Hoer, a multi-time North Carolina state champ, was not on our pre-season top 5 freshman to watch, but this performance certainly catapulted her onto the radar.
Over at the Stanford Invite, Sierra Vega of UCLA was the top finishing freshman in 9th running 21:02. Vega was one of the Bruins top recruits from the 4th Ranked Recruiting Class this August. She was 3 seconds ahead of Stanford frosh and 4x Foot Locker Finalist Jessica Tonn. The Stanford women's freshman class was Ranked 3rd back in August. On the men's side, Stanford's Erik Olson was the top finishing freshman running 24:05 for 16th. The California native, however, ran unattached which suggests he may be red-shirting this year. The top attached freshman was on spot and 8 seconds back. It was Arkansas' Bryan Cantero, the freshman from France with track PRs of 1:50 and 3:41.
Other top male freshmen running this week were at the Brooks OSU Cowboy Jamboree. Oklahoma State boasts the #2 ranked recruiting class and many of their freshman were on display in their first college race. On top was Foot Locker runner-up Matt McElroy, who placed 12th in 24:55. The next true frosh across the line for the Cowboys was Shane Moskowitz in 20th, but he ran the race unattached. Also running unattached was Ok State frosh Kirubel Erassa back in 70th, with a few freshman teammates in between Moskowitz and Erassa (including Neal Smith in 25th), who both ran sporting last year's Foot Locker singlets.
On Thursday, the Watch Lists for the Under Armour 'The Freshman'/Flo Frosh, FloRunner, and FloCoach (Top Teams) will be out. For the freshman this year, we will let you have a voice as to who is at the top of the Watch List by voting in the polls below.
