2010 FloAwards, Release #3

Our third release of the season is out after a great weekend of races that was highlight with the PreNationals in Terre Haute!

The 2010 FloAwards are here and taking a look at the top teams, individuals and freshman in the country.  We will be following the results around the country each week in an effort to award those who are tops in each category come November 22nd.

Stay tuned for our next release after Conference Weekend on November 4th.

MEN Individual WOMEN Individual
1 Sam Chelanga 1 Lucy Van Dalen

Liberty
Although Sam didn't run the fastest time at PreNats, he continued to race unchallenged. He's the returning NCAA Champ and Collegiate 10k record holder so until we see evidence of someone giving him a run for the title then he'll stay atop the list. It looks like we won't see any challenge of that nature until Nov 22nd.....time will tell!

Stony Brook
Lucy remains undefeated by winning the two most competitive women's meets of the season, Notre Dame and Pre-Nats. She gets the nod over Blue Race champ Kamaiyo, because she beat here head-to-head at ND. The Kiwi will not really be tested again until the NCAA meet as her biggest American East Conference competition will be her sister.

2  Chris Derrick 2  Risper Kamaiyo
Stanford
Continuing to run smooth and look confident, Chris led his Cardinal squad to a dominating PreNats victory while running the #9 all-time 8k (23:16) on the Terre Haute course....along with two other teammates of his. If he lets himself go for it we don't doubt he'll be in it until the final straightaway. He'll have some good tests coming at Pac-10s next weekend.

UTEP
Risper ripped a super-fast 20:02 at PreNats to get the win. With a time like that, the only thing keeping her out of the top spot is the fact that she was 3rd 2 weeks ago at Notre Dame. The sophomore looks strong and should have some challengers come the Mountain Regional.

3  David McNeill 3 Sheila Reid
NAU
Having not raced an xc race since Sept 25th at Stanford, people are excited to see McNiell get back out there after his 8th place finish at the Commonwealth Games 5k. He will be a definite competitor for Chelanga and if he's there with 400 to go, Sammy may have some trouble dealing with this man's kick!
Villanova
After placing second to van Dalen at Notre Dame, Sheila kept her shoes completely on this weekend to pick up a win and lead the Wildcats in a victory at the Penn State National Meet. The Big East will be her next big test, where she will have to take on women from Georgetown, Syracuse, Providence and her own team.
Sleeper
Colby Lowe
Sleeper
Jordan Hasay
Ok State
Colby has shown great progression and consistent improvement at the elite level the last 2+ years and we expect it to continue. After leading his squad at the Chile Pepper Invite, Lowe looked strong and confident....two keys to success when coming to Terre Haute. This guy is tough and will not be afraid to hang.

Oregon
Looked very smooth at the Dellinger Invite next to teammate Kosinski as they dominated a weak field. A year strong, a year wiser, Jordan is never one to count out. We may have to wait for NCAAs until we see her truly challenged.

MEN TEAM WOMEN TEAM
1 Stanford 1 Villanova
Cardinal
Pure dominance was seen this past weekend with Stanford finishing with a very rare 1-2-3 at PreNats.  The top 3 ran times ranking #9-#11 all-time at Terre Haute.  Stanford is strong through six and will have a small challenge next week at Pac-10s in Oregon.  The future battle with the Cowboys could be epic, fans can not wait until Nov 22nd...but they'll have to!

Wildcats
The Wildcats won this past weekend by about 30 points over a strong Syracuse squad but still have yet to be given a stiff challenge.  Right now, on paper, Texas Tech looks to be the only ones who have a chance to beat these women.  It may seem that they aren't quite as deep as last year and they are counting on a true frosh in the their top five, but if these women are on in Terre Haute watch for the repeat!
2  Oklahoma State 2 Texas Tech

Cowboys
Is there a question to what team has the strongest top 4....no.  Ok State continued to run somewhat controlled and very strong at the same time.  Their top four all finished in front of the #1's from Indiana and Arkansas at Chile Pepper....they actually swept the first four spots of the race.  With no real challenges from conference or region foes we'll have to keep waiting for these guys to run "unleashed."  Whats keeping them from number one?  Their gap from 4 to 5 and lacking the depth of Stanford.  But as we said above, the battle could be on to remember.

Red Raiders
Led by Rose Tanui, Texas Tech looked very dominate this past weekend at UVA's Panorama Farms Invite.  This squad has a couple new comers to their top five and have yet to race anyone that has been able to challenge them.  They will have back to back races against Colorado coming up so we should know more about this team in the coming weeks.  What we see now....they are good!

3  Oregon 3  Oregon
Ducks
The Ducks swept the top three against a good Wisconsin team this past weekend at home.  This team doesn't look to be as strong as the two ranked ahead but with Puskedra and Centro leading up front and a guy like AJ who still has yet to come on, this team could see themselves right near the top as they did a year ago.
Ducks
The Oregon women solo in the team competition at Dellinger, but the 1-2 punch of Hasay and Kosinski could be one of the best in the country.  The gap has to close between Kosinski and 3-4-5 and if that happens this group could surprise people.  They will face a good test next weekend at Pac-10s against good Arizona and Stanford squads, along with meet host Washington.
Sleeper
Iona
Sleeper

Florida State
Gaels
The Gaels were one of the big surprises at last weekend's PreNats finishing second in their race without two of their top five, including returning All-American Ryan Sheridan.  With a few more weeks to work and a full squad to come, coach Ricardo Santos could see his guys back on the podium come November!

Seminoles
Even with their 1-2, Cheriyot and McShine, fading at PreNats this past weekend FSU still found a way to take home the victory.  We've seen Karen Harvey do it again and again with her squads the past few years and we have a feeling this one won't be any different.  We could see a good race at the ACC Championships next weekend against Duke.

1 Parker Stinson (166) 1 Laura Hoer (139)

Oregon
Parker was 11th (24:08) overall and the 5th Duck at Dellinger, which turned out to be essentially an Oregon/Wisconsin Dual, but it was definitely an improvement from his opener. Next up, Parker will look to be the top freshman in a very competitive Pac-10 Conference, where he will get a race from the #2 frosh on this weeks list.

NC State
Still atop the frosh ranks, Laura has continued to impress this season. Not only was she the top frosh at PreNats, Laura was one of the top individuals at the meet running an astounding 20:13 for 4th.  The more she runs the better she gets and it that continues who knows how high she could finish come November.

Erik Olson (76) 2 Emily Sisson (117)

Stanford
Only weeks into his college career, was the top frosh in the PreNats Blue Race, running as the 7th man for the top team of the day. He was 53rd with a 24:28. We will see a great match up between him and the Oregon freshmen in 2 weeks at the Pac-10 Championship.

Wisconsin
Emily is coming around and definately had a better showing this time out. She hung with the lead pack again this time and finished 15th overall. Its only a matter of time before she is still with the leaders with 1k to go.
3 Jake Hurysz (57) 3 Emily Lipari (68)
UNC
Jake was behind fellow frosh Erik Olson in his race, but voters had confidence in him this week. He was only 4 seconds back from Olson, so that gap can be closed by nationals. This is especially true if you have notice the improvements Jake has made with each collegiate race this season.

Villanova
Two Emily's in the top frosh watch list, Lipari also has the fortune of being on the top ranked team in the nation. She improved on her first race this weekend by moving up to the 4th Wildcat across the line, placing 8th at the Penn State National Invite.

Sleeper Matt McElroy (40)
Sleeper Marielle Hall (11)

Ok State
Since his season opener, Matt has been under the radar. He did not race this at Chili Pepper with his team, but expect him to toe the line at Big 12s and help the Cowboys defend their title.

Texas
Marielle was the surprise freshman of the weekend, although, maybe she shouldn't have been. One of the top milers in the country last spring (4:45), the New Jersey native was the top frosh in her race PreNats, leading the 5th place Longhorn team.
