Division 2 Review: Oct 22-23

The Adams State Women joined their Male counterparts atop the Division 2 Cross Country Rankings. Some teams ran some regular season non-traditional races this past weekend (10ks, 3 milers) with some impressive marks. The Western State Men had an intrasquad meet and showed again they have some depth.

Bison Stampede  Harding #10

Daniel Kirwa, first in 14:51, led his team to a dominating victory by placing 8 in the top 10.  Philip Biwott placed number 2 for Harding in a time of 15:10. According to the Harding website the course was 3 miles in length.

Division 2 Cross Country Challenge Men | Women  Shippensburg: Men #6 Women #3

Patrick Fullerton of Stonehill took the individual honors in 25:35 over Shippensburg’s Matt Gillette. The rest of the Raiders top five-followed Gillette across the line to contribute to the team’s low score of 20 points.

Neely Spence of Shippensburg won in impressive fashion, 20:57, and led her Lady Raiders to an impressive finish. Mary Dell, of Shippensburg, was the next finisher in 22:00. The Lady Raiders scored an impressive 20 points to mirror the men.

UW-Eau Claire Lake Wissota Cross Country Invitational Minnesota Duluth #7

Minnesota Duluth’s Taylor Marble finished 8th overall in 19:29 to lead her team to a 3rd place finish. Kayla Johnson, a freshmen, placed 2nd on the team and 13th overall in 19:38 to contribute to the Lady Bulldogs finish.

Lock Haven River Run  LockHaven #8

 Nick Hilton ran 25:02 to take the individual honors and lead 4 fellow Bald Eagles across the finish to secure a 16-75 win over the nearest team finisher, Indiana University of PA.  Nathan Zondlo placed second in 25:06 and the Bald Eagles put 7 under 25:30 with a split 1-7 pack time of 28 seconds.

Marauder Open University of Mary #10

Melissa Agnew placed first running 21:44 and lead 6 fellow U-Mary ladies across the finish. The U-Mary women not only had a perfect score but also had a 1:44 1-7 pack time capturing the first 7 spots.

Mountaineer Open Men| Women Western State Men #2 Women #6

 The men had an intrasquad meet splitting into three teams. Wsc Slate, Crimson and freshmen. There were also a few unattached runners I presume to be athletes on the team. Gabe Proctor lead Wsc Slate to the team victory covering the 8425-meter course at altitude in 27:50 (26:30 through 8k) Sean Brown fellow Wsc Slate member placed 2nd in 27:57.

Western State women faced off against Mesa State. Alexis Skarda of Mesa took the individual honors in 18:22. Lauren Kleppin of Western State took second in 18:38 and led 3 other women across the line to capture the team title 20-44

Highlands Cross Country Jam Men| Women Adams State: Men #1 Women#1

Univeristy of New Mexico’s Moses Kirui took the individual honors in 25:02. Brandon Birdsong ran #1 for the Grizzlies in 25:35. Steady #1 Ryan McNiff ran #3 finishing in 25;47. The Grizzlies narrowly beat the New Mexico Highlands Men, 24-32.

The Grizzly women ran strong in their first week at #1. Ashley Quintana who placed 1st in 22:10 led them. Fellow teammate Cassie Mitchell was 3rd in 23:31

Western Washington Invitational

Western Washington: Women #8 Men #11 Alaska Anchorage: Women #4 Men #9

The men covered 10 kilometers and Marko Cheseto of Alaska Anchorage won in 30:41. Fellow teammate Micah Chelimo placed second in 31:15 to help lead the Alaska Anchorage team to a win over Western Washington (33-65). Western Washington’s Jordan Welling was 3rd overall in 31:25

Western Washington’s Sarah Porter took the win in 20:59. Miriam Kipng’eno and Ruth Keino of Alasak Anchorage both running 21:10 and 21:13 followed her closely finishing 2nd and 3rd. The Alaska Anchorage Women took a narrow win over Club Northwest (42-49) and the Western Washington Women placed 4th overall with 88 points.


Conference Action

There was only one conference that took place this past week. The other 21 conferences take place the weekend of Nov 6/7th. We will have a Conference Wrap up that week in place of the D2 Review.

Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association

Women: Brittney Killebrew and team mate Manuela Rigaud  of Winston Salen University went 1-2 in the Conference Championship running 19:40 and 20:01 respectively. The Winston Salem Women won a very narrow race over Virginia State University (34-35)

Men: Andrew Chebii and Aron Barnes of Winston Salem went 1-2 and ran 24:33 and 25:57 respectively. The Winston Salem Men took the team title with 26 points
