D3 Weekly Recap (Jan 28-29)
Last weekend was the first real weekend of racing for most of Division 3’s top runners, illustrated by the fact that 19 of the 20 provisional or automatic qualifying times in the men’s and women’s mile currently come from meets over this past weekend.
BU’s Terrier Invitational played host to the most notable D3 performances of the weekend, headlined by Mike Heymann’s (Plattsburgh St.) automatic qualifier of 14:13.05, the second fastest indoor D3 time since 1997. The men’s 5k also saw five provisional marks, three of which came from Tom Donnelly’s fourth-ranked squad at Haverford—including a 14:30.84 clocking for cross country national champion Anders Hulleberg.
The fast times at Terrier continued in the mile, which featured a total of seven qualifying marks, four of which were autos. These quick times were highlighted by last year’s runner-up in the mile, Will Yochum of Amherst, in 4:07.16. Even more impressively, the mile featured yet another three Haverford runners hitting qualifying times. The DMR also saw the three fastest D3 times of this young season, led by Geneseo State’s blistering 9:53.21, which, when accounting for bank, is the second fastest time ever posted in D3 history in this relatively new event. The 3k, possibly because it is not a national event, saw less action, though Paul Norton and Alex Kramer of Brandeis raced to the third and fourth fastest D3 times thus far in 8:31.81 and 8:32.17, respectively.
On the women’s side, the 5k featured 2 provisional qualifying marks, including the weekend’s top D3 time of 17:12.09 from Rutgers-Camden’s Robin England. The mile saw four women dip under the provisional standard, led by Grayce Selig’s D3-leading 4:54.82. In the DMR, Keene State was able to post the first qualifier of the season with their provisional mark of 12:06.51. Similar to the men’s race, the women’s 3k had a slightly smaller draw, with Emily Lipman of Haverford leading the D3 charge in 10:25.07.
Other weekend action included the top three times of the season in the men’s 800, all at different locations. Last year’s mile and 1500 champion Nick Guarino (Fredonia) led the charge with his 1:50.99, followed closely by last year’s outdoor runner-up in the 800, Emmanual Bofa of Whitworth, who ran 1:51.15 at the UW Invitational. Also of note on the men’s side is Patrick Klein of UW-Platteville, who ran a D3-leading 4:06.85 on a flat track at the Badger Elite Invitational, though this result has not been put onto the D3 performance lists thus far.
Cross country runners-up and indoor’s top-ranked men’s squad, North Central, played host to a quad meet that featured limited distance action, though two Cardinals hit provisional 400 meter times, including a D3 leading 49.15 from Dan Benton, and three other Cardinals hit qualifiers in the pole vault. Bolstered by these top marks, North Central defeated the division’s fourth ranked squad, UW-Whitewater, by a score of 299 to 179.
Action on the women’s side was slightly more limited this weekend, with only a few qualifying marks in the distance events outside of the Terrier Invite. Top results include Keelie Finnel of Coe winning her race with a 2:15.87 at the Jack Jennet Invitational and Catie Ellingson (Simpson) dipping under 5 flat and winning by over 30 seconds at the Dubuque Spartan Invitational with her clocking of 4:59.47, both of which are good for the second fastest in D3 so far. In the longer events, Christina Valerio and Cecilia Furlong of Johns Hopkins hitting provisional marks of 17:28.40 and 17:40.42 at the Penn State National Invitational, and Annie Dear and Jennifer Gossels of Williams running D3’s top 3k times of the weekend in 10:06.80 and 10:07.25 at Reebok’s Boston Indoor Games. Also, the two fastest marks in the 400 to date came at the IWU Titan Open with Lauren Alpert of Illinois Wesleyan running 57.39 to Philita Johnson of Greenville’s 58.15, though the two were in separate heats.
The nation’s top-ranked squad on the women’s side, UW-Oshkosh, posted some solid results at the Tadd Metzger Invitational, with their throwers sweeping the top five spots in the weight throw and taking five of the top six collegiate spots in the shot put, with a total of three automatic and four provisional qualifying marks among the two events.
The action continues next weekend with the Leonard “Squig” Converse Invitational, where UW Whitewater will play host to North Central and many other Wisconsin schools, the New Balance Collegiate Invitational at the Armory, featuring Haverford and other top D3 schools competing against premier D1 talent, and a tri-meet featuring two of the division’s three top-ranked women’s squads, MIT and Williams.
