Alan Webb took the Drake Grand Blue Mile in Des Moines yesterday over last year's champion Boaz Lalang (1:42 over 800 meters in 2010).

The winning time was slow, as Webb won in 4:08.22.  He utilized a fierce kick over the final meters to just edge Pete van der Westhuizen (formerly Nebraska miler), who was second in 4:08.75. Lalang faded to fourth, in 4:12. Webb is slated to compete again Saturday.

In the women's race, Sara Hall won in 4:45. Amy Mortimer, last year's champion, finished second in 4:46. Mortimer will headline the 1500 field at Saturday's Drake Relays.
