Here is a breakdown of some of the standout performances from Day 2 of the 2011 Penn Relays:

HS Girls 4x800 :  Tracey (2:03.17) leads Jamaica to 8:39 victory

Ristananna Tracey nearly led the Edwin Allen team from Jamaica to a Penn Relays record. They fell just short of the blazing 8:37.71 meet record, but managed an 8:39.22 effort. Tracey has already run 52.38 for the open 400, 2:03 in the open 800 and 55.81 in the 400-hurdles this year!

Tracey's split of 2:03.17 was supplemented with teammate Marleena Eubanks' 2:07.78 split, leading the Jamaican team to a 20-second victory over the rest of the field.


Women's 4x100 Championship of America : A&M Beats LSU

Coming into the event Texas A&M and LSU were ranked 1-2 nationally in the 4x100. They performed accordingly, as they ran the 2nd and 4th fastest times of the NCAA outdoor season, respectively. The A&M squad of Gabby Mayo, Jeneba Tarmoh, Dominique Duncan and Ashley Collier took the victory 43.24 to 43.49.  

 

College Women's 4x1500 Championship of America : BC Upsets

Boston College pulled off a huge upset in the women's 4x1500 meter relay. Caroline King anchored BC with the fastest split of the meet (4:12.2), leading BC to the win. King had to kick down Emily Infeld of Georgetown, who last night capped off a gutsy performance to give Georgetown the Penn Relays Distance Medley Relay title. The two battled down the final stretch, but it was King with the fresh legs and the winning sprint.

Sheila Reid of Villanova made up quite a bit of ground on the last leg, but didn't quite have enough to catch King and Infeld.  Villanova would recover well enough to finish third after a poor start and dropped baton.

College Men's DMR Championship of America : Nova nips Arkansas & BYU

Villanova redeemed their women's DMR, riding the strong kick of anchor leg Matthew Gibney to claim the 2011 Penn Relays DMR title. Gibney was able to kick past distance studs Dorian Ulrey of Arkansas and Miles Batty of BYU for the 9:37.93 win. Arkansas came in second at 9:38.40, while BYU was third at 9:38.60.

Nova continued a streak of upset victories, as Georgetown and Boston College were underdog winners in the women's DMR and 4x1500 relays earlier in the meet.  

The 2011 NCAA Indoor DMR champion BYU Cougars did not quite have enough this time, as Gibney and Ulrey were able to kick past Batty with 150 meters remaining (Batty did receive the baton just back, and still split the second fastest mile time in 4:01.34).

Gibney unleashed a perfectly timed kick to slingshot off the turn and blow past Batty. Batty, having run a 3:36 1500 at Mt. Sac weeks ago, had to have thought the race was in hand with 200 to go.  He stormed to the lead with 300 left, looking untouchable. But it was Gibney and Ulrey who had a little left in the tank.




High School Girls' 4x400 Championship of America : Jamaican sweep

The top three teams were all Jamaican, as Vere Technical (3:37.79), Holmwood Tech (3:40.33) and Edwin Allen (3:40.45) battled for the win.  

The 400 depth from Jamaica on display here was absolutely amazing.  Here are some of the splits from the various Jamaican teams : Olivia James (53.4) / Shericka Jackson (53.62) / Jenieve Russell (52.8) / Chrisann Gordon (52.9) / Shashawna French (53.9) / Ristananna Tracey (52.5). 

Looks like the US vs. Jamaica sprint battles are sure to continue for years to come!


College Men's Sprint Medley Championship of America : Penn St. wins blanket finish

Ryan Foster had just enough in the final 800 anchor leg to hold off a hard-charging Florida and Texas A&M team. Foster's split  of 1:48.78 gave Penn a thrilling 3:17.11 to 3:17.30 victory over Florida, as A&M was just back in 3:17.67. The Gators were led off by defending NCAA 100-meter dash champ Jeff Demps, and Texas A&M was in the lead until the anchor (Joey Roberts 1:49.52 split).
