Day 2 of the 2011 New Balance Nationals was historic, as both the girls 2-mile and boys 4x800 National records were broken.
Firstly, the race of the night was undoubtedly Aisling Cuffe of Cornwall-on-Hudson (NY) breaking the HS 2-mile record and besting her previous fastest time in the country this year in 9:54.22 (previously 9:56), as she won in over 11 seconds! Cuffe (NY) nearly broke Jordan Hasay's American Junior record of 9:52.13, but she did crush the national HS record, improving upon Molly Huddle's time of 10:01 from 2002. Could Cuffe possibly break 9:50 next year? With her continued progression, 9:40's could be possible. Her dominance in the 2-mile downplayed the overall depth in the girls 2-mile, as 3 runners ran 10:10 or better.
In the men's version, Ammar Moussa topped the Rosa twins (Joe and Jim) in the boys 2-mile, as 4 boys broke 9 minutes. Moussa, bound for the University of Colorado this fall, wraps up a dominating senior campaign with a national 2-mile title. Moussa's time of 8:51.80 falls short of his 8:49.59 season's best, but it still qualified as the 7th best time in the country in 2011. The Rosa twins both broke 9 minutes (the first time in 2011 for Jim) as they a complete their historic careers as New Jersey prep greats.
A very close runner-up for race of the day was the Long Beach Poly men setting the national meet record in the boys 4x800, running an amazing 7:28.75 (old record was 7:30.67). The team of Christopher Hall, Myles Andrews, Aaron Harris, and Christian Penn from California ran the fastest time in the country by 3 seconds (besting their own 7:31.69 from the Penn Relays.) Andrews anchored the team with a 1:47.71 split to bring home the win.
The Maryland Titans blazed to a win of almost a second in the girls 4x200 relay, beating Western Branch (Virginia) 1:37.17 to 1:38.06. Their time qualified as the 5th fastest in the country this year. The men's side was much closer, as Knightdale Track Club of North Carolina won in 1:25.04 in a thrilling finish over Charles W. Flanagan of Florida (1:25.05). Both times ranked in the top 5 in the country this year.
The boys 100 featured a terrific battle between Sean McClain and Aaron Ernest, as McClain outleaned Ernest at the line for the win in the Boys 100. The Raleigh Junior defended his title with a 10:31 (McClain was 10.34) and will be toeing the line in the 200 later this weekend. Levonte Whitfield of Florida was 3rd in 10.53.
The girls 100 wasn't nearly as dramatic, as Octavious Freeman of Florida continued the dominance she's displayed throughout the season. Octavious took the win in 11.41, topping Myasia Jacobs of Paterson, NJ (11.59). The senior from Lake Wales wraps up a dominating 2011 campaign as she preps to leave for Central Florida this fall.
Demetrius Lindo of Washington DC upset Artie Burns of Miami, Florida in the boys 110 hurdles. The DC junior beat Burns (#3 in the nation) 13.58 to 13.68, running the second fastest time in the country.
