ARKANSAS MEN’S TRACK AND FIELD

Eight earn All-Academic accolades

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The University of Arkansas men’s track and field team collected eight academic honors Wednesday with the release of the 2011 Division I All-Academic Track and Field Team by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). Lane Boyer, Brede Ellingsen, Scott Gillespie, Noah Kittelson, Kevin Lazas, Andrew Pennington, Duncan Phillips, and Ben Skidmore were all recognized for their work in the classroom.

This marks the sixth career All-Academic selection for Boyer, three each for track and field and cross country. Ellingsen and Pennington have both now garnered two academic honors while Gillespie, Kittelson, Lazas, Phillips and Skidmore are being recognized for the first time.

Ellingsen (high jump), Lazas (heptathlon and decathlon), Phillips (mile) and Skidmore (400m, 4x400m) were also All-Americans during the 2011 indoor and outdoor seasons for their respective performances in competition.

Arkansas led the Southeastern Conference with eight members on the All-Academic roster. A total of 27 student-athletes from the SEC were selected. Minnesota and Nebraska led the country with 12 All-Academic nods apiece while the Big 12 Conference led all leagues with 45 All-Academic selections. Conference affiliations used reflect the 2010-11 academic year.

A total of 420 student-athletes representing 153 institutions were named to the 2011 Division I All-Academic Track and Field Team. To qualify for the USTFCCCA All-Academic honors, the student-athlete must have compiled a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.25 and met athletic standards that included a top-96 ranking for individual events, or top-48 status for relays, during the indoor season or participation in any round of the NCAA Championships for the outdoor season.
