ARKANSAS WOMENÂ’S TRACK AND FIELD

All-Academic honors for womenÂ’s track

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The University of Arkansas women’s track and field team picked up eight academic honors Thursday with the release of the 2011 Division I All-Academic Track and Field Team by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). The list of Razorback selections includes Makeba Alcide, Tara Diebold, Gwendolyn Flowers, Kristen Gillespie, Megan Jackson, Paige Johnston, Ivanique Kemp and Miranda Walker.

For Walker, this is the fifth overall USTFCCCA All-Academic recognition. She has now been selected three times for track and field and twice for cross country. Jackson earns her fourth career honor, while Diebold adds the third selection to her resume. Alcide, Flowers, Gillespie, Johnston and Kemp are being lauded for the first time.

Alcide (pentathlon and heptathlon), Diebold (pole vault), Flowers (4x400m), Gillespie (1,500m and DMR) and Kemp (100mH) were also All-Americans for their respective performances during the 2011 indoor and outdoor track and field seasons.

Arkansas is tied for third among Southeastern Conference teams with eight selections. A total of 53 student-athletes from the SEC were named to the All-Academic Team. Nebraska has 19 honorees to lead all of the nationÂ’s squads, while the Big 12 earned 95 accolades to lead the league category. Conference affiliations used reflect the 2010-11 academic year.

A record total of 663 student-athletes representing 172 institutions earned USTFCCCA All-Academic honors. To qualify, the student-athlete must have compiled a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.25 and met athletic standards that included a top-96 ranking for individual events, or top-48 status as part of a relay, during the indoor season or participation in any round of the NCAA Championships for the outdoor season.
