Williams at World University Games

 

            FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Selected to the Team USA roster in June, Shelise Williams is set to begin competition at the 2011 World University Games in Shenzen, China. Opening ceremonies are scheduled for Friday with the track and field competition being contested Aug. 16-21 at the Main Stadium of Universiade Center.

            The opening heats of the 400 meters will be run Aug. 16. The three-round competition will conclude Aug. 18 with the final. The first round and final of the 4x400-meter relay are scheduled for Aug. 20 and 21, respectively. Williams will be joined by Team USA running mate Diamond Dixon of the University of Kansas in the 400 meters.

            During the 2011 track and field season, Williams was a three-time SEC champion with a victory in the indoor 400 meters and a pair of 4x400 relay titles with teammates Gwendolyn Flowers, Regina George and Whitney Jones. With two outdoor All-America honors in 2011, Williams closed out her collegiate career as an 11-time All-American, combining indoor and outdoor accolades.

            The World University Summer Games were first held in 1959 in Turin, Italy, and were last contested in 2009 in Belgrade, Serbia. Known as the Universiade—a combination of “university” and “Olympiad”—, the World University Games is an international multi-sport event organized by the International University Sports Federation (FISU). Overall, there are 25 sports on the event schedule.
