U.S. and Germany split at Thorpe Cup
CHULA VISTA, CALIF. – When competition concluded at the Olympic Training Center Sunday, the United States and Germany finished with a split in the 19th edition of the Thorpe Cup. It was the Germans claiming the men’s decathlon competition over the United States by a combined score of 38,870 points to 38,006 and the United States winning the women’s heptathlon by a tally of 17,611 to 17,115.

Bette Wade used solid scores in the 100m hurdles (13.77 seconds) and the high jump (1.84m/6-0.50) to help her total of 6,052 to win the heptathlon for the women. Germany’s Simon Hechler outdistanced the field with a total of 8,058 to win the decathlon portion.

Teams for the Thorpe Cup are made up of seven men and women with the top five decathlon scores and the top three heptathlon scores counting in the team standings.

Also finishing in the top three for the United States were Joe Detmer and Ryann Krais, who finished second and third in the decathlon and heptathlon, respectively. Detmer grabbed his top marks Saturday in the 100m (10.95) and long jump (7.38m/24-02.5) to finish with a total of 7,846, while Krais found her best numbers in the 100m hurdles (13.61) and 800m (2:09.10) to help her total of 5,831.

As they continue to prepare for the 2011 IAAF World Championships August 27-September 4 in Daegu, South Korea, competing in individual events Sunday for the U.S. was Ryan Harlan in the 110m hurdles (14.60) and the discus (46.04m/151-0), reigning world champion Trey Hardee in the discus (49.34m/161-10) and the pole vault (5.01m/16-05.25), as well as current world leader Ashton Eaton in the discus (47.36m/155-04). For the women, Sharon Day competed in the long jump (5.90m/19-04.25) and the javelin (41.89m/137-05), and Hyleas Fountain competed in the javelin (43.56m.142-11).

Team USA submits final roster for Daegu
Team USA on Monday submitted its final roster to the IAAF for the 2011 World Championships in Athletics, to be held August 27-September 4 in Daegu, South Korea.

USATF announced its preliminary roster on August 10 (http://www.usatf.org/News/Team-USA-in-Daegu-to-include-8-defending-champs,-1.aspx). On the roster submitted on Monday, NCAA indoor and outdoor champion Jessica Beard of Texas A&M replaces Debbie Dunn in the women’s 400m, and NCAA runner-up Stephanie Garcia of the University of Virginia replaces Delilah DiCrescenzo in the women’s steeplechase. Keshia Baker has been added to the women’s 4x400m relay pool.

Beard placed fourth in the 400m at the 2011 USA Outdoor Championships in 51.06 seconds and Garcia was fourth in the steeple in 9:51.57. Dunn and DiCrescenzo both were third in their respective races at the USA Championships and have withdrawn due to injury.

Elite group set to compete at World University Games
Over the next six days, an elite group of collegiate American track and field athletes will call the 2011 World University Games home. Held at the Universiade Center in Shenzen, China, the World University Games run August 12-23 with the track and field competition beginning Tuesday and running through Sunday.

The competition will play nicely as preparation for the 13th edition of the IAAF World Championships which will be contested August 27-September 4 in Daegu, South Korea. The American rosters consist of a total of 10 men and 10 women with four of those athletes also on the roster for this year’s World Championships.

In order to qualify for the World University Games, athletes need to be between the ages of 17 and 27, have completed at least one three-credit course toward a degree or diploma within the last year and have met the qualifying standard in their respective event.

2011 USA Outdoors long jump champion Marquise Goodwin, USA Outdoors 400m hurdles champion and owner of the second-fastest time in the world Jeshua Anderson, USA Outdoors high jump champion Brigetta Barrett and high jumper Erik Kynard all find their names on both the rosters for the World University Games and the World Championships.

The remaining women’s roster includes: Nia Ali (100m hurdles), Tiffany Townsend (200m), Lakya Brookins (100m), Christina Manning (100m hurdles), Shayla Mahan (100m), Aareon Payne (200m), Ti’erra Brown (400m hurdles), Diamond Dixon (400m) and Shelise Williams (400m).

The remaining men’s roster includes: Brendan Ames (110m hurdles), Joey Hughes (400m), Ronald Brookins (110m hurdles), Mason Finley (shot put and discus), Casimir Loxson (800m), Justin Murdock (100m and 200m) and Ryan Martin (800m).

The coaching staff includes head men’s coach James Li and head women’s coach Robyne Johnson. Jim Murphy will be the team’s head manager with Junko Yazawa and Justin Montoya serving as medical staff for the teams.

USA tops Canada to claim junior race walk match
It was the USA women and the Canadian men who were able to secure wins Sunday at the 23rd edition of the USA vs. Canada Junior Race Walk at East Boston Memorial Park. But the performance put on by the U.S. women proved to be too much and carried the United States to victory in the overall scoring competition.

The U.S. women were led by three-time match competitor Abby Dunn (Auburn, Maine), who moved strongly in the final kilometer to take the win in 25:54, ahead of early pacesetter and teammate Erica Shaver (Washington Township, Ohio) in 26:31. Katelyn Ramage (British Columbia) finished third for Canada with a time of 26:54, and it was Courtney Williams (Vassalboro, Maine) who sealed the team win for the U.S. with her fourth-place finish in 27:13. The USA earned a 15-7 victory.

Fortunes were reversed in the men's race, as Ben Thorne (British Columbia), the Canadian junior record holder at 10,000m, won the race in a time of 44:13. Teammate Bruno Carriere (Quebec) placed second for Canada in a time of 49:30. Alejandro Chavez was the top American finisher in third place with a time of 50:24, and Jonathan Hallman (Pickens, S.C.) was close behind in 51:12. Canada outscored the U.S. 13-9 in the match.

In the combined scoring format, the tight U.S. women's pack provided the points to earn a 24-20 combined score win over the visiting Canadians. The distances were covered on an almost flat 1,054-meter loop.

The 2012 meet is scheduled to be held in Canada in late summer at a site to be announced.
