Cragg into final at World Championships

 

            FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Former University of Arkansas distance standout Alistair Cragg is into the finals of the 5,000 meters at the 2011 IAAF Track and Field World Championships in Daegu, South Korea. In other action Thursday, current Razorback Raymond Higgs competed in the long jump.

            Cragg, running for his native country of Ireland, finished 12th overall with a time of 13:39.36 in the preliminary heats. He finished fifth in the second heat of qualifying to claim the final automatic berth into the championship race. The finals of the 5,000 meters at the World Championships are schedule for Sunday, the final day of competition. Cragg is making his third appearance at the World Championships, having also competed in 2007 and 2009. Bernard Lagat (13:33.90) of the United States was the top qualifier in the event.

            Higgs, competing for the Bahamas, made his first World Championships appearance with Thursday’s qualifying round of the long jump. The Razorback jumper finished 12th in Group ‘B’ and 25th overall with a day’s best of 7.72m (25-4). He will not advance to Friday’s final.
