Hoosiers Fall in Heartbreaker to UCSB

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Indiana Volleyball (8-3) lost a tough one to U.C. Santa Barbara (6-5) in a five-set heartbreaker (24-26, 16-25, 25-22, 25-21, 13-15). IU looked to have lost control of the match, dropping the first and second set to trail 0-2, but the Hoosiers battled back to force a fifth set and fought to a 1-12 tie in the final set before the Gauchos took the win. IU had a true team effort, putting three players in double figures in kills and in digs as well.

Kelci Marschall tallied a double double with a team-high 13 kills to go along with 16 digs. Samantha Thrower and Ivie Obeime both finished with 10 kills. Caitlin Cox had 21 digs and six aces. CoxÂ’s aces are tied for the fourth most in IU history for a single match and ties for third-most ever in a five-setter. Caitlin Hansen added 13 digs.

After charging out to an early lead in the first set, the Hoosiers werenÂ’t able to close out the Gauchos, who fought off two match points and won the final four points of the set for the win. In the second, the Gauchos cruised to a 25-16 win. The Hoosiers emerged from the locker room with great energy in the third, taking it 25-22 and dominated the fourth 25-21. The fifth was tight throughout, including eight ties on the way to a 15-13 win for the Gauchos.

The Hoosiers return to action this evening, playing San Diego in the final match of the USD Invitational. Cody Sharrett will have the live play-by-play on IUHoosiers.com. For complete coverage of all things IU volleyball, stay tuned to IUHoosiers.com.
