Razorbacks ranked No. 2 to begin season
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – In the preseason poll released Tuesday afternoon by the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches’ Association (USTFCCCA), the University of Arkansas men’s track and field team received a No. 2 ranking. This marks the
highest start for the Razorbacks since being the top-ranked team prior to the 2009 season.
Arkansas is part of a three-way Southeastern Conference jam atop the preseason poll. The Razorbacks own a point total of 149.44, just more than a point behind preseason
No. 1 Florida (150.54). LSU is the third-ranked team by the USTFCCCA. Overall, there are six SEC teams ranked inside the top 25 with Ole Miss at 19th, Mississippi State at 20th and Georgia at 21st.
The SEC, tied for the nation lead with six teams ranked, holds the top spot in the Conference Index rankings with 611.56 points. Respectively, the top five conferences
are the SEC, Big Ten (six teams), Big 12 (four), Pac-12 (three) and ACC (three).
The Razorbacks’ roster for 2012 features 12 returning All-Americans including their entire 4x400-meter relay team and Marek Niit, SEC champion and national runner-up
in the 200 meters (outdoors). Arkansas’ returning senior All-Americans are Tarik Batchelor, Rick Elliott, Duncan Phillips and Ben Skidmore.
The next round of USTFCCCA computer rankings will be released Jan. 24. The 2012 NCAA Division I Indoor Track and Field Championships will be contested March 9-10 in
Nampa, Idaho and hosted by Boise State University.
Arkansas returns to action Jan. 13 with the third annual Arkansas-Texas Dual at the Randal Tyson Track Center in Fayetteville. Competition at the dual meet is scheduled
