Virginia Competes at Three Meets Across the Country
Cavaliers finish action at Liberty Quad, day one of Tyson Invitational and FloTrack Husky Classic
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.—The Virginia men’s and women’s indoor track and field teams competed in three meets Friday (Feb. 10), including the Liberty Quad in Lynchburg, Va., the Tyson Invitational in
Fayetteville, Ark., and the FloTrack Husky Classic in Seattle, Wash.
“I was pleased to see that some of our student-athletes took advantage of the opportunities that were in front of them today,” Virginia director of track and field/cross country
Bryan Fetzer said.
Across the country at the FloTrack Husky Classic, freshman
Chris Foley (Chantilly, Va.) finished third in his men’s 5,000 meters heat and 11th overall in a personal-best time of 14:03.67, the third-best time in ‘Hoo history.
Senior Anna Corrigan (Burke, Va.) placed 11th overall in the womenÂ’s 5,000 meters in a time of 16:31.18, the fifth-fastest mark in UVa history. Sophomore
Katherine Walker (Stafford, Va.) crossed the line ninth in her heat in 16:54.98.
At the Tyson Invitational, senior
Kevin Anding (Houston, Texas) finished in 47.78 in the menÂ’s 400 meters, just two one-hundredths off his PR, while in the womenÂ’s 400 meters, freshman
Jordan Lavender (Nashville, Tenn.) set a PR in 55.30, the sixth-fastest time in school history.
Junior Pearl Bickersteth (Dumfries, Va.) placed second in the women’s high jump with a mark of 1.73m (5’8”).
At the Liberty Quad, the ‘Hoos picked up 13 wins, including sophomore
James Fuson (Glen Allen, Va.), who won the men’s weight throw with a mark of 17.37m (57’00) and finished second in the shot put with a PR of 15.68m (51’5.5”).
In the womenÂ’s high jump, sophomore
Emily Kianka (Pennington, N.J.) won the women’s high jump with a height of 1.70m (5’7”). Sophomore
Anna Finger (Berlin, Germany) took the women’s long jump with a leap of 5.64m (18’6”) and senior
Matt Meyer (Suhlendorf, Germany) won the men’s long jump at a mark of 6.81m (22’4.25”).
Freshman Ryan Satchell (Central Islip, N.Y.) earned gold in the men’s triple jump with a leap of 14.57m (47’9.75”), while classmate
Britni Strates (Orlando, Fla.) won the women’s triple jump with a mark of 11.76m (38’7”).
In the menÂ’s 60 hurdles, sophomore
Aaron Shepperd (Washington, D.C.) won in a time of 8.24, while freshmen
Devin Brewer (Dumfries, Va.) and Christian Lovorgna (Sparta, N.J.) placed second and fifth in 8.37 and 8.87, respectively.
UVa swept the 800 meters with sophomore Natalia Kuhn
(Virginia Beach, Va.) winning the womenÂ’s race in 2:13.48 and freshman
Payton Hazzard (Huntington, N.Y.) taking the menÂ’s in 1:57.04.
Other winners included junior
Danielle Wiliams (Alexandria, Va.) in the womenÂ’s 200 meters (24.92), sophomore
Ozzie Bryan (Philadelphia, Pa.) in the menÂ’s 400 meters (50.40) and sophomore
Thomas Porter (Fredericksburg, Va.) in the menÂ’s mile (4:15.93).
The menÂ’s 4x400 relay team of Bryan, Hazzard, junior
Austin Von Ohlsen (Ridgefield, Conn.) and freshman
Afolabi Shokunbi (Washington, D.C.) won in a time of 3:25.10.
The Cavaliers continue action at the Tyson Invitational and the FloTrack Husky Classic Saturday (Feb. 11).
