ACC Championships Preview
ACC Championships Preview

Here is the fourth in a series of previews of the weekend's top collegiate conference championship meets. Earlier I previewed the MPSF Championships, the Big 12 Championships and the SEC Championships.
For more previews of conference meets in the southeast -- Sun Belt, OVC, Big South and Southern Conferences -- go to my blog at tracksuperfan.com.
Remember, all references to team rankings, either national or regional, are my own rankings and not those of the USTFCCCA.
The meet runs from Thursday through Saturday at Boston's Reggie Lewis Track & Athletic Center.

Live results
Men's meet
Nationally-ranked teams: #14 Virginia Tech, #23 Florida State
Regionally-ranked teams: #1 (Northeast) Virginia Tech, #4 Florida State, #6 (Northeast) Virginia, #7 North Carolina St., #8 North Carolina, #9 Clemson, #18 Duke, #23 Georgia Tech, #23 (Northeast) Maryland
Analysis: Don't be fooled by the rankings above. Florida State is a much better team than they have yet shown and the Seminoles are quite capable of winning this thing. Defending champ Virginia Tech is no pushover, though, and Florida State cannot afford many mistakes.
Events to watch
Weight throw (8:00 PM Friday). Virginia Tech's Marcel Lomnicky and Alexander Ziegler are currently #2 and #3 in the NCAA.
60m hurdles (12:40 PM Saturday). Clemson's Spencer Adams is ranked #3 in the NCAA.
60 meters (1:20 PM Saturday). This could be a microcosm of the meet as a whole, as the favorites are Kemar Hyman (Florida State) and Keith Ricks (Virginia Tech).
200 meters (2:00 PM Saturday). Defending NCAA outdoor champion Maurice Mitchell (Florida State) has run only once this winter, and unimpressively at that. The Seminoles will need him and teammate Horatio Williams to run near their potential.
Women's meet
Nationally-ranked teams: #2 Clemson, #24 Florida State
Regionally-ranked teams: #1 Clemson, #4 Florida State, #4 (Northeast) Virginia Tech, #5 North Carolina, #8 (Northeast) Virginia, #17 Miami, #17 (Northeast) Maryland, #19 Duke, #20 North Carolina St., #22 Georgia Tech
Analysis: Clemson is a contender for the NCAA Championships, so it would be a very big upset if anyone was able to knock them off. The Tigers already proved their competitive mettle by winning the New Balance Collegiate Invitational over such heavy hitters as LSU and Texas A&M.
Events to watch
Pole vault (5:30 PM Friday). Virginia Tech's Victoria von Eynatten and Martina Schultze are both in the NCAA's top ten. Von Eynatten is best known for winning silver at the 2010 World Junior Championships.
Mile (12:10 PM Saturday). This should be a great race between Virginia's Morgane Gay and Florida State's Amanda Winslow and Hannah Brooks.
400 meters (1:10 PM Saturday). Clemson's Marlena Wesh is the NCAA leader.
Triple jump (1:30 PM Saturday). Expect a good battle between Florida State's Michelle Jenije and Clemson' Jasmine Brunson.
60 meters (1:30 PM Saturday). Clemson's Stormy Kendrick and Dezerea Bryant are currently 3rd and 4th in the NCAA. Miami's Tarika Williams could offer some competition.
60m hurdles (12:50 PM Saturday). Expect Clemson to show its strength with Brianna Rollins, Bridgette Owens and Kendra Harrison. Rollins and Owens lead the NCAA and Harrison is in the top ten.
