Kemp breaks school record in 60m hurdles

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Ivanique Kemp set the school record in the 60-meter hurdles Friday evening as the No. 2 University of Arkansas women’s track and field team hosted the Arkansas Last Chance meet at the Randal Tyson Track Center. Kemp established a new program mark of 8.13 on her way to a first-place finish in the 60-meter hurdles. The Razorbacks also collected wins from Martine Borge and Tiffany Hines at 800 and 60 meters, respectively.

“I think we were able to solidify our team’s ranking of No. 2 today,” associate head coach Rolando Greene said. “In the half-mile, things were looking really good at 600 meters and all of a sudden, Martine (Borge) is in the (NCAA) meet with a great run. I always felt Ivanique had an 8.0 or 8.1 in her and it came through today. Now she enters the national meet as the No. 6 or 7 seed. If she can replicate that next weekend, she’s an NCAA finalist.”

Having qualified with a time of 8.20 in the preliminary heat, Kemp lowered her time even more with her run in the finals. Her time of 8.13 surpassed the previous school record of 8.16 set by Kyla Shoemake in 1998. Entering the day, Kemp had a season-best time of 8.27 which she ran last week at the SEC Championships. Based on times entering the weekend, she now has the seventh-fastest time in the NCAA.

Borge led a 1-2 finish at 800 meters as she and teammate Samantha Learch both dipped below the 2:06 mark to set personal bests.  Borge took more than two seconds off her previous best and crossed the finish in a time of 2:05.41, good for the No. 13 time in the NCAA this year. Learch followed right behind in a time of 2:05.91, more than one second faster than her previous best.

The Razorbacks’ third win of the meet came from Hines at 60 meters. She entered the final as the second-fastest qualifier but improved to a personal-best 7.42 in the finals to come away with the first-place showing. Hines was back on the track leading a 2-3-9 finish for Arkansas at 200 meters. All three Razorbacks—Hines (23.69), Gwendolyn Flowers (23.93) and Rachel Werner (25.02)—had personal bests in the race.

Earlier in the day, Whitney Jones finished in second place in the long jump. The Razorback senior equaled her personal best with a jump of 6.23m/20-5.25 in the opening round of jumps. That equaled the measure she used to win the long jump title at the SEC Championships last weekend.

Makeba Alcide, in preparation work for the pentathlon, established a personal best in the shot put with a throw of 12.20m/40-0.5. That mark came in her final attempt of the competition. In other field results, Danielle Nowell finished fourth in the pole vault and Tamara Myers placed fifth in the triple jump.

The NCAA declared entries list is scheduled to be released Monday evening. The 2012 NCAA Indoor Championships will be contested March 9-10 at the Jacksons Track in Nampa, Idaho.
