Fabrizio breaks VirginiaÂ’s freshman record
JACKSONVILLE, Fla.—Senior
Lance Roller (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.) and redshirt freshman Vanessa Fabrizio (Denver, Colo.) swept the 800 meters as the Virginia menÂ’s and womenÂ’s track and field teams completed
action at the weather-shortened Best Western North Florida Invitational Saturday (March 31). Thunderstorms in the Jacksonville area delayed SaturdayÂ’s start and cancelled the meet early.
“I’m disappointed that the meet was cancelled early, but that is part of being an outdoor sport,” director of track and field/cross country
Bryan Fetzer said. “We did however get a lot accomplished during this abbreviated weekend in a number of events. Our student-athletes continue to make the most of the opportunities presented.”
Fabrizio broke the Virginia freshman record in a time of 2:07.48, the sixth-fastest time overall, while senior
Tasia
Potasinski (Centreville, Va.) placed eighth in 2:11.67.
Roller and sophomore
Anthony Kostelac (Charlottesville, Va.) went 1-2 in the menÂ’s 800 meters in 1:49.17 and 1:49.19, respectively.
Senior Erin Wykoff (St. Jacob, Ill.) won the women’s discus throw with a distance of 52.14m (171’ 1”). Wykoff’s fourth throw was a personal best and ranks fifth in program history.
In the womenÂ’s high jump, junior
Pearl Bickersteth (Dumfries, Va.) placed second with a height of 1.72m (5’ 7.75”), while sophomore
Emily Kianka (Pennington, N.J.) and freshman
Moira Cronin (Andover, Mass.) reached a height of 1.67m (5Â’ 5.75). Kianka earned seventh and Cronin placed ninth on misses.
Senior Andy Fahringer (Whitehall, Pa.) earned second in the men’s javelin with a throw of 70.64m (231’ 9”). Fahringer’s best mark came on his second attempt.
Sophomore Tommy DeVita (Ridgewood, N.J.) finished second in the men’s high jump with a height of 2.02m (6’ 7.5”). Junior
Dallas Rose (Pearland, Texas) placed third in the shortened women’s triple jump with a mark of 12.18m (39’ 11.5”). Rose only had two attempts before the action was stopped due to weather.
In the menÂ’s 110-meter hurdles, sophomore
Aaron Shepperd (Washington, D.C.) finished third with a PR of 14.36, the ninth-fastest time in program history, and freshman
Devin Brewer (Dumfries, Va.) tallied a PR himself, placing fifth in 14.59.
Freshman Jordan Lavender (Nashville, Tenn.) crossed the line sixth in 55.85, the third-fastest freshman mark in school history.
Next up, the Cavaliers split up for two in-state meets, the Colonial Relays in Williamsburg, Pa., and the Liberty Collegiate Invitational in Lynchburg, Va., on April 6-7.
