NationÂ’s Top Athletes Compete at Pac-12 Track & Field Championships in Eugene

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - The Pac-12 Conference Track and Field Championships (82nd annual for men, 26th annual for women) continues in Eugene, Ore., with the running and field events. The University of Oregon plays host to the championships at Hayward Field on Saturday and Sunday, May 12 and 13. Hayward Field is also the site of the 2012 U.S. Track and Field Olympic Trials, to be held in June.

Tickets for the two-day event can be purchased through the University of Oregon ticket office by calling 1-800-WEB-FOOT or by going online at www.GoDucks.com.

HEPTATHLON/DECATHLON... OREGONÂ’s Dakotah Keys and Brianne Theisen won the decathlon and heptathlon, respectively, at the 2012 Pac-12 MenÂ’s & WomenÂ’s Track and Field Championships multi events competition. Theisen had a career-performance, posting 6,353 points, setting a Pac-12 record and the most points in the country. Winning five of the seven events over the weekend, Theisen broke the mark set by ARIZONA STATEÂ’s Jacquelyn Johnson, who posted 6,307 points in 2008 at the Pac-10 Championships. It is TheisenÂ’s third-career Conference title, winning the heptathlon in 2009 and 2010. She was forced to sit out the 2011 campaign because of injury. She also becomes only the third athlete in the 26-year history of the Pac-12 Track & Field womenÂ’s championships to eclipse the 6,000-point mark. Her point total also ranks third all-time in NCAA history.

ASUÂ’s Keia Pinnick finished with a strong second day of competition to remain in second place in the heptathlon standings with 5,703 points. COLORADOÂ’S Genny Mayden was third (5,362), followed by her teammate Brianne Beemer (5,339) and UCLAÂ’s Tatum Souza (5,334). Beemer was the fastest runner in the 800-meter race, with a time of 2:09.24. WASHINGTONÂ’s Shelby Williams was the only other top placer, winning the shot put on Saturday (42-4.75/12.92m).

In the menÂ’s competition, Keys, a redshirt-freshman, posted 7,793 points to win the decathlon. Keys won three of the 10 events to take the individual title, including the javelin (207-11/63.38m), high jump (6-9/2.06m) and long jump (23-7.5/7.20m).

UCLAÂ’s Marcus Nilsson was second with 7,539 points, after taking first in the shot put (47-4.5/14.44m) and discus (139-7/42.54m). The BuffÂ’s Adam Salzmann was third in the decathlon standings with 7,214 points, followed by ASUÂ’s Austin Prince (6,917) and Dominic Giovannoni (6,891).

2012 NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS... Drake will host this yearÂ’s NCAA Championships, June 6-9 at Drake Stadium in Des Moines, Iowa. The University of Texas will host the NCAA West Preliminary Rounds, May 24-26 in Austin, Texas. 

2012 PAC-12 CHAMPIONSHIPS... USC will host the 2012 Pac-10 Championships, to be held May 4-5 and 11-12 at Loker Stadium.
