Delaney Leads Junior Ducks
Brewer, Noelle, Francis advance.
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Arthur Delaney qualified for the IAAF World Junior Championships by virtue of his third place finish in the 100 meters Friday at the USA Junior Outdoor Track & Field Championships.
Delaney, a freshman from Gresham, Ore., ran 10.63 in the final to become eligible for the World meet that will be contested July 10-15 in Barcelona, Spain. He timed 10.45 in the preliminaries
earlier in the day to advance to Friday night’s final.
Other USA Junior finishers for the Ducks included Ryan Pickering taking third in the 5,000 meters in 14:29.25, with Matthew Melancon sixth in 14:51.93.
In preliminary round action, Chris Brewer and Chad Noelle advanced in the men’s 1,500, while Claudia Francis moved on in the women’s 800.
Brewer, from Vista, Calif., was the second fastest qualifier for Sunday’s final after running a personal-best 3:49.76. Noelle, from Greene, N.Y., won his heat in 3:52.32.
Francis, from Laurelton, N.Y., captured her heat in 2:09.24 to claim a spot in Saturday’s final.
In the men’s decathlon, Alec Fellows was 17th after the first day with 3,326 points. The freshman from Woodway, Wash., set a personal best in the shot put with a throw of 37-7.25/11.47m.
