George second at Africa Championships

 

            EUGENE, Ore. – In a continuation of her strong summer season, Regina George finished in second place at 400 meters late Friday at the 2012 Africa Athletics Championships at Charles de Gaulle Stadium in Porto-Novo, Benin. In addition to the silver finish, the Razorback standout reset her own school record with her time of 51.11.

In other international competition, Ivanique Kemp won the 100-meter hurdles title at the Bahamas Championships and former Razorback Veronica Campbell-Brown placed second at 100 meters at the Jamaica Championships. Both are set to represent their respective country at the 2012 Summer Olympic Games in London.

George ran three rounds of the 400 meters in as many days at the Africa Championships, finishing second in each heat. She trailed only reigning world champion Amantle Montsho of Botswana in the race. In the final, her time of 51.11 improved upon the previous school mark of 51.17 she ran last week in winning the Nigeria Championships. George has now broken the school record three times in her last three competitions.

            Running last weekend at the meet in the Bahamas, Kemp posted a time of 13.48 to win the national title. With her national-record time of 13.13 set back at the NCAA Championships in Des Moines, Iowa, she owns the Olympic ‘B’ standard and will represent her country in London.

            Earlier this weekend in the rounds of the 100 meters at the Jamaica Championships in Kingston, Campbell-Brown secured her spot on the Olympic team with a second-place finish in a final time of 10.82. She qualified for the final with a dash of 11.03 in the semifinal. Campbell-Brown is also scheduled to compete at 200 meters, the event in which she is the defending Olympic champion.
