Ashton Eaton and Allyson Felix win Jesse Owens Award
On Monday morning, United States Track and Field announced that Ashton Eaton and Allyson Felix have been named the winners of the Jesse Owens Award. The recipients are recognized as the best male and female athletes in the sport.
Eaton takes home the award for the first time after setting world records and breaking them all throughout the 2012 season. He set the decathlon world record at the Olympic Trials in Eugene. At the 2012 Summer Olympic Games in London, he did not disappoint as took gold.
He continues to train in Eugene, Oregon and hopes to continue his winning streak at the 2013 World Championships in Moscow.
Allyson Felix's Jesse Owens Award in 2012 is the fourth in her career, nobody has won the award more times in their career. Felix was previously tied with Marion Jones with three victories.
2012 was a good year for Felix as she won three gold medals in London. She finally earned an individual gold in the 200-meter dash by defeating Veronica Campbell-Brown in her third attempt on the big stage. Her success in London extends to relay races as the United States 4x100-meter team set a world record and the 4x400-meter team posted the third best Olympic time.
The award will be presented to Eaton and Felix at the Jesse Owens Hall of Fame Banquet on December 1st in Daytona Beach, Florida.
