The summer track circuit happens so fast, that plenty of small news can get swept under the rug. Unlike the other seasons where everything is geared towards the weekends, all sorts of meets are held throughout the week. It’s a bit like baseball, I guess. As much as I like watching games almost everyday, I’m also usually kicking myself for not setting my fantasy team’s roster.

So between the USA Championships (last week), the USA Youth Champs (ongoing) Ostrava (today), Edmonton (tomorrow), Harry Jerome (Sunday), and Birmingham (Sunday), some important tidbits may go unnoticed.

UCF may be sending two sprinters to Moscow, but they’re also sending their coach to southern California. They’re also getting one from southern California.

Following the NCAA Outdoor Championships, USC’s director of track and field Ron Allice announced his retirement. Allice leaves after coaching for 50 years, 19 of which were at USC.

USC needed to fill the vacancy.

The Trojans then named Caryl Smith Gibert, "a six-time Conference USA Coach of the Year at the University of Central Florida who guided the Knights' women's team to a program-best fifth place finish at both the 2013 NCAA Track and Field Outdoor and Indoor Championships, as their director of track and field."

UCF then needed to fill the vacancy.

On Wednesday, UCF announced that they hired long-time UCLA women’s head coach Jeanette Bolden as their head coach. Bolder is “an inductee to the USTFCCCA Hall of Fame, an Olympic gold medalist, a three-time NCAA championship coach and a former United States Olympic team coach. And now, she's a Knight.”

UCLA then needed to fill the vacancy.

So why not hire an alumnus? Enter, John Frazier. The former Bruin athlete returns to his alma mater and hopes to bring UCLA back to the national stage. According to Derrick Li of The Daily Bruin, “Frazier’s success as a coach at the University of Tennessee garnered the attention of Mike Maynard, the director of track and field at UCLA, who had just recently overhauled the coaching staff last summer.”

That leaves Tennessee with a vacancy. We haven’t heard anything, yet.

While we’re waiting to hear news from Knoxville, we’re still anticipating an announcement from the University of Texas. And Illinois.
