David Rudisha Out of Moscow World Championships

A new 800-meter world champion will be crowned in Moscow as current Olympic and World Champion David Rudisha has been left off the Kenyan national roster headed to the IAAF World Championships, according to Athletics Weekly.  Although Rudisha has an automatic bid to Moscow because he is the defending 800m World champ David Monti of Race Results Weekly has confirmed via twitter that Rudisha will not compete.

Rudisha has been treating a knee injury after getting hurt on a run in Central Park in May. His last race of the season was the Adidas Grand Prix, where he ran 1:45.14 under rainy conditions on May 10. He scratched at the Prefontaine Classic and was shut down  for a few weeks shortly after.

The Kenyan 800-meter squad will have a new look with Olympic bronze medalist Timothy Kitum also left off the roster due to his sixth place finish at the Kenyan trials. Anthony Chemut was the Kenyan national champion on Saturday, where he ran a season’s best of 1:44.33 at altitude. Newcomer Ferguson Rotich Cheruiyot ran 1:44.38 for a personal best to finish second. Former 400-meter hurdler Jeremiah Mutai placed third in 1:44.59 for the final roster spot.

Once dominating the list of world leaders, Rudisha remains Kenya’s top time of the year with his 1:43.84 from Doha, which is now fifth on the list. All three Americans headed to Moscow are in the top four with Duane Solomon as the world leader in 1:43.27.
