Olympic champion Jessica Ennis-Hill has withdrawn from the IAAF World Championships in Moscow with an achilles injury.

“To say I am gutted is an understatement,” Ennis-Hill told BBC. “No athlete likes to miss the opportunity to compete at a major championship.”

In her second competitive appearance since winning gold last summer, the heptathlete took part in the 100m hurdles and long jump at the London Diamond League Meeting. The two-time World Championship medalist finished fourth in the 100mH (13.08) and eighth in the long jump (6.16m).

"Up until now we have been focusing on managing the pain so I can train and get myself in shape to win in Moscow," Ennis said. "The time has now come to stop chasing fitness and look to cure the problem."

Ennis-Hill joins a growing list of track and field stars who will not be present in Moscow (for various reason). The list includes, but isn’t limited to:

- Nijel Amos (800m)
Taoufik Makhloufi (1500m)
David Rudisha (800m)
- Blanka Vlasic (high jump)
- Tyson Gay (100m and 200m)
- Sanya Richards-Ross (400m)
- Vivian Cheruiyot (5k and 10k)
- Yohan Blake (100m and 200m)
- Asafa Powell (100m and 200m)
- Kenenisa Bekele (5k and 10k)
- Asli Cakir Apptekin (1500m)
Caster Semenya (800m).
