Government Shutdown may withdraw Air Force from ND Invitational

The U.S. Department of Defense has announced the suspension of all intercollegiate athletic competitions at all service academies. Due to the shutdown, certain sports information departments may be closed for media availability.

The Air Force cross-country team is scheduled to run at the Notre Dame Invitational in South Bend Indiana. Army and Navy are scheduled to run at the Paul Short Invitational. Air Force is also scheduled to race at the 2013 Adidas Wisconsin Invitational on October 19. A government shutdown on athletics for a few weeks would definitely hurt their chances if they are considered a bubble team for the NCAA Cross-Country Championship.

The Air Force men and women swept team titles at the Colorado State Open. Two weeks later, the men placed second at the Rocky Mountain Shootout in Boulder.

Army swept their season opener at the Army Open, lost their dual meets to Cornell and then placed fifth on the men's side and sixth on the women's side at the Iona Meet of Champions.

Navy's men's cross country team has already competed at four meets this season. They won their first two contests at the Seagull Opener and Fordham Fiasco. They placed second at the Navy Invitational and then third at the Iona Meet of Champions.

The annual gridiron battle between Air Force and Navy may be suspended. A decision on the football game is expected to be made by noon on Thursday.
