Oscar Pistorius weeps at the stand
Oscar Pistorius broke his silence over the murder of girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp as he took the witness stand on the first day of questioning by the defense team. The Olympian could not hold back his emotions as he wept and apologized to the family of the slain model.
"There hasn’t been a moment since since this tragedy happened that I haven’t thought about your family," Pistorius opened. "I wake up every morning and you’re the first people I think of, you’re the first people I pray for. I can’t imagine that the pain and sorrow and the emptiness that I caused you and your family."
There points in his recounting of the night in which Pistorius' voice trailed off and judge Thokozile Masipa asked for him to speak up. He also revealed that he is currently taking anti-depressant medication to combat the sleepless nights of panic.
He no longer is fascinated by firearms after being questioned about incidents in which he reacted with guns.
Pistorius faces a sentence of at last 25 years in prison, if found guilty for premeditated murder. The double amputee claims he mistook Steenkamp for a home intruder and acted in self-defense.
