Midwest Talent Taking Over Rankings
Midwest Talent Taking Over Rankings

West Coast best coast? Not according to our women's Saucony Flo50 team rankings.
The #1 Michigan State and the #2 University of Michigan women are making history with their rankings. These teams have been battling within the Big Ten Conference and their respective NCAA regional the last five years, but they've taken their talent and skill to new heights in 2014.
The midwest is stacked on the women's side this year after the mitten-state teams, with #6 Iowa State, #11 Butler, #15 Wisconsin, #22 Oklahoma State, and #25 Tulsa. These homegrown schools are challenging the stereotype of Pac-12/West Coast dominance. Last year, Butler and Michigan dominated an intense NCAA Championship race, finishing 3rd and 4th. Blame it on the cold and wet Terre Haute conditions if you must, but there's no denying these midwest girls know how to compete.
Taking a look at our top 10 individual rankings, the top two ladies hail from West Coast programs. Their hometowns, however, support this midwest prophecy. #1 Shelby Houlihan was born and raised in Sioux City, Iowa, and #2 Emma Bates comes from Elk City, Minnesota.
#5 Erin Finn, #7 Colleen Quigley, and #10 Rachele Schulist also come from midwest states, as well as seven other Top 25 ladies. Is there something in the water that gives these athletes super-human running powers? If anything, their roots may explain their ability to compete well in the most important XC races, Wisconsin and Terre Haute, located in none other than the midwest.

Schulist stuck her nose in with the lead pack in Minnesota, and came away as the Spartans number one runner. Gutsy running will take her far in Terre Haute.
