2015 NCAA Women's Weight Throw Preview
2015 NCAA Women's Weight Throw Preview

Brea Garrett, Texas A&M (PB 22.66m)
Last Year: 1st Indoors, 23rd Outdoors
The returning NCAA champion is the favorite heading into the 2015. Not only will she be attempting to repeat her title, but she’ll be looked to for major points for the Aggies. The outdoor champs will try and snap Oregon’s indoor winning streak, and with Garrett’s personal best throw the best by a good amount, victory could be in their future.
Ida Storm, UCLA (PB 21.90m)
Last Year: 2nd Indoors, N/A Outdoors
Storm has been around the top of the weight throw/hammer circuit for four seasons now as she enters her fifth-year. She’s close to breaking that 22 meter mark and will challenge Garrett in 2015. Her personal best throw, set the at the NCAA Championships, broke the Swedish National Record.

Kayla Padgett, East Carolina (PB 21.95m)
Last Year: 11th Indoors, N/A Outdoors
Padgett finished the regular season with the fourth-best throw in the nation before settling for 11th at the NCAA Championships. She’ll need to compete harder at the national level, and if she can nail that down, there’s no reason Padgett won’t join the top ranks of Storm and Garrett.
Chioma Amaechi, California (PB 21.75m)
Last Year: 16th Indoors, N/A Outdoors
Amaechi recorded her longest throws at the Husky Classic and MPSF Championships before falling to 16th at NCAAs. A newcomer to the national scene, last year could be looked at as a preparation year for this Golden Bear. She now knows she can produce big throws, which should carry her into the top five this season.
Brittany Funk, Akron (PB 21.77m)
Last Year: 8th Indoors, 4th Outdoors
This two-time MAC Champion in the weight throw is the only lady in this field who produced two First Team All American honors during indoor and outdoor. Her consistency at competing on the national level gives her an edge over her competitors, and she’ll be looking to end her Akron career on a high note.

Jillian Weir, Oregon (PB 20.58m)
Last Year: N/A Indoors, 6th Outdoors
Talent runs in the family. Weir’s father, Robert, was a three-time Olympian for Great Britain and Weir seems to be really hitting her stride on the national level. Though she failed to qualify for NCAA Indoors, she was the Pac-12 Champion in the hammer throw, as well as First Team All American. She’s our darkhorse because she’s a stronger in the hammer, rather than the weight. But when an NCAA title is on the line, the Ducks always show up.
