Alberto Salazar Defends Himself

Nike Oregon Project coach Alberto Salazar defended himself and Olympc silver medalist Galen Rupp while vehemently denying accusations that he ever engaged in doping or unethical practices to gain competitive advantages for his athletes.

In an 11,642-word open letter posted to the Oregon Project website, Salazar called the cheating allegations made by former athletes and employees in a June 3 BBC Panorama documentary and ProPublica report “demonstrably false,” and provided meticulous documentation that he has always followed anti-doping protocols and safeguarded his athletes.

"I will never permit doping," Salazar wrote in the response, adding: "I have not and will not condone any athlete I train using a banned substance and would never encourage any athlete to use a banned substance."

In Salazar’s 28-page response, he attached 30 redacted emails, medical papers and training documents to refute allegations made by former NOP runners Adam and Kara Goucher, former assistant coach Steve Magness and John Stiner, a massage therapist who worked with the group in 2008.

“At best they are misinformed,” Salazar wrote. “At worst, they are lying.”

Rupp, as well as other NOP athletes Shannon Rowbury, Matthew Centrowitz, Mary Cain and Trenier Moser (Jordan Hasay scratched due to injury) are slated to compete in the USA Outdoor Championships in Eugene beginning on Thursday.
