USA Women's 10K: Molly Huddle Leads 10K Charge

MEN'S 10K PREVIEW | WOMEN'S 10K PREVIEW

The women’s 10K this year is shaping up to be a good one. Set to go off at 7:35 p.m. PT Thursday, the conditions should remain around 85 degrees for the ladies on the track. With Jordan Hasay now out of the event, one more spot opens up to make that world team.

The Favorite

Molly Huddle (SB: N/A PB: 30:47.59)

Even with Shalane in the mix, Saucony’s Molly Huddle is the woman to beat in this race. She’s been having a monster outdoor season, and made it clear that she will be focusing on the 10K this season. She set the American record in the road 5K at the B.A.A. race, and set a PB in the half marathon earlier in March. If Huddle can perform like she has so far this season, she should have no problem qualifying to the World Championships.

The Best

Shalane Flanagan (SB: 31:09.02 PB: 30.22.22)

In 2008, Shalane Flanagan set the American Record in the 10K with a time of 30:22.22. Since then, Flanagan has continued to find success in the longer distances. In 2014, she set a PB of 2:21:14 in Berlin, and more recently, she ran 2:27.47 at the Boston Marathon. This season on the track, she’s run 15:11.15 for the 5K, and 31:09.02 in the 10K. Seeing how Flanagan is easily the most decorated athlete in the field, it’d be quite an upset to see her finish out of the top three.

Fresh Off The Press

Emily Sisson: (SB: 31:38.03, PB: 31:38.03)

Sisson has some good momentum behind her right now. Fresh off a 5K win at the NCAA Championships two weeks ago, and a brand new New Balance contract, Sisson has to be feeling confident coming into this race. The 23-year-old has the third-fastest seed in the field with a time of 31:38.03. She finished sixth in the 10K finals back in 2013, and also competed in the 2012 Olympic Trials in the 5K.

Looking for Redemption

Emma Bates: (SB: 32.13.28, PB: 32:13.28)

Similar to Emily Sisson, Emma Bates also competed in Eugene just two weeks ago. However, unlike her counterpart, Bates did not experience the amount of success she expected at the NCAA Championships. Earlier in the season, Bates set a PR in the 5K with a time of 15:32.46, then came back a month later and PR’d in the 10K with a time of 32:13.28. Can Bates bounce back and snag one of the top three spots?

The Wildcard

Alexi Pappas: (SB: 32:02.22, PB: 32:02.22)

New to the event, Pappas has also seen success in the 10K this outdoor season. In her first ever 10K performance at the Payton Jordan Invitational, Pappas recorded a time of 32:02.22. Pappas has also recorded a seasonal best in the 5k of 15:46.38 and a road 8k PB of 26:32. the 25-year-old took seventh-place in the 5K at last year's outdoor championships. Being a former Duck might help bring out some Hayward Field magic as well.

The Comeback Kid

Emily Infeld (SB: 31:38:71, PB: 31:38.71)

Emily Infeld has been making quite the comeback this outdoor season. After taking some time off due to injury, Infeld has made the most of her two races on the track this season, recording “A” standards in both the 10K and 5K. Her 10K PB came from the Payton Jordan Invitational, where she ran 31:38.71. In her most recent performance at the Portland Track Festival, Infeld ran a 15:07.19 in the 5K.
