Ashton Eaton and Nick Symmonds to Face Off at FloTrack Throwdown

You’ve seen them on the confirmed athletes page, but did you know that the FloTrack Throwdown will feature two of America’s biggest track and field athletes duking it out over 400m?

That’s right. Ashton Eaton and Nick Symmonds are racing each other. In the 400m.

Before you go and make your predictions, take a look at the numbers:

Ashton Eaton
100m: 10.21
200m: 20.76
400m: 45.64
1000m: 2:32.67
1500m: 4:14.48
400m hurdles: 48.69

Nick Symmonds
400m: 47.45
600m: 1:14.47
800m: 1:42.95
1000m: 2:16.35
1500m: 3:34.55

Strength meets speed in this unique battle and, let’s be honest, you would only be able to find this type of match-up at the FloTrack Throwdown. With both athletes looking to sharpen their skills before heading over to represent Team USA in Beijing, who will come out on top?

Eaton may look like the clear favorite here. He has a faster 400m PB, and not to mention his impressive 48.69 in the 400m hurdles. 2015 has not been a heavy track season for Eaton, however. He ran 46.27 in the 400m at the Oregon Twilight on May 8th and most recently won the 110m hurdles in 13.38 at the Edmonton Track Classic. He was forced to withdraw from the Hypo-Meeting in Gotzis, though, the competitive multi-event competition in May, due to injury. With no full decathlon to his name and more focus on field events in 2015, how fit will Eaton be over 400m next month?

Symmonds is a different story. He ran the 1500m at the Payton Jordan Invite in 3:44 on May 2nd to open up his season, a far ways away from his 3:34 PB. He followed that up with a 1:49 800m performance at the Hoka One One Mid-D Classic a few weeks after. When some were counting Symmonds out at June's U.S. Championship, he won in 1:44.53, proving that knowing how to execute through championship rounds is more important than running blistering fast times in the early season.

With both prepping for their prime at the end of August in Beijing, this one-lapper could be one of the most intriguing track races in history.

Will it be the decathlon world record-holder Eaton, the one they call the “Greatest Athlete in the World," and one half of the sport's most powerful couple?

Or will the third-fastest American over 800m, the one who invented Run Gum and once competed in American Ninja Warrior earn the title of the fastest 400m man at the FloTrack Throwdown?
