British Athletics Deny Lennie Waite's Appeal
Earlier this week, British steeplechaser and Rouge AC athlete Lennie Waite announced that she would file an appeal after not being selected for the British World Championship team, despite running four seconds under the qualifying standard.
Now, it wasn't this cut-and-dry. Unlike the American qualifying system, the British require their athletes to run the standard (9:44.0) twice. Waite had only run under the standard once.
Today Waite announced on her blog that her appeal was denied.
After going through a rather ardous appeal process, calculating her chances of finishing top-eight at worlds, and even noting that several other British athletes were selected for the team despite only running the standard once, Waite was confident that she would recieve good news from the comittee. Unfortunately, the answer was still a "no".
The excerpt below is a quote from Waites blog post, demonstrating her frustration with British Athletics.
"Considering the mistake that I spotted in the statistics, combined with the inconsistencies in team selection, I can’t help but sit here and feel that the British Athletics process is unfair to its athletes. It is time to reassess the qualities of the authorities, to raise awareness to sponsors of the process they are supporting, and to demand change and transparency."
