ASICS Future Stars: Sophomore Boys Update #2

We’re back with our rundown of some of the best high school underclassmen in the nation, and today it’s the sophomore boys’ turn in our ASICS Future Stars series. These 10th graders are beginning to establish themselves not only statewide but also across the nation.

Several in this list made our first release on September 17th, but there are also some newcomers this time around.

Brodey Hasty (Brentwood, TN)

Brentwood High sophomore Brodey Hasty’s consistency on the cross country course is his most admirable skill, and since our last update the Tennessee native added a solid 15:24 5K at the Trinity/Valkyrie Invite to go with his sophomore-leading 15:13 from August 29th. After a year spent as one of the top freshmen in the nation, Hasty is looking to separate himself in 2015 as the country’s top sophomore.

Jack Landgraf (Dana Point, CA)

Dana Hills (CA) sophomore Jack Landgraf broke out in a big way this past weekend at his home meet at the Dana Hills Invite, winning the 3-mile race in 14:28, a cool 48-second PR and the fastest time run by a sophomore in 2015. Just a little indication of how much Landgraf has improved since last season: at the same meet a year ago, the then-freshman was 46th in 15:50. Now, he’s the ninth fastest 3-miler in the country for all grades.

Joaquin Martinez De Pinillos (San Diego, CA)

Taking advantage of the lightning quick Stanford Invitational course in Palo Alto, CA over the weekend, Cathedral Catholic sophomore Joaquin Martinez De Pinillos dropped a crazy fast 15:16 5K to finish 5th in the seeded race and lower his PR by 26-seconds. De Pinillos was the top underclassman at Stanford and now owns the second-fastest 5K by a 10th grader in 2015.

Dylan Jacobs (Orland Park, IL)

Sandburg High’s Dylan Jacobs makes his first appearance on the Future Stars list after taking down fellow outstanding sophomore Charlie Kern Jr. and running a 14:36 3-mile at the Richard Spring Invitational, second-best for all 10th graders this season. Jacobs beat Kern Jr., who was 8th at the State meet as a freshman, and lowered his PR by 40-seconds, not bad for a day’s work.

Matthew Kearney (Austin, TX)

Westlake sophomore Matthew Kearney is a perfect 6-for-6 this cross country season, including a victory this past Saturday at the Cy Woods XC Invitational 5K in 15:41. Kearney has now run 15:42 or faster four times this season, and owns the 10th-fastest 5K (15:34) for all Texans in 2015.

Dustin Horter (Liberty Township, OH)

Since taking a loss to open his fall campaign on August 15th, Lakota East’s Dustin Horter has won his last three races, including a victory two weekends ago at the Alliance Invitational in 15:28 for 5K. That time cut 30-seconds off Horter’s finish from that meet a year ago, and came on the heels of his 15:21 PR at the Queen City Invite just two weeks prior. After running the fastest 3200 by a freshman in 2015 (9:13), Horter is poised to dominate on the XC course very soon.

Josh Schumacher (Portland, OR)

Jesuit sophomore Josh Schumacher has a father who knows a thing or two about distance running, as dad Jerry Schumacher coaches the Nike-sponsored Bowerman Track Club. The young Schumacher has used his family pedigree to become one of the top underclassmen in the nation, and just last weekend the sophomore lowered his 5K PR down to 15:37. Whether Josh is the next Evan Jager is yet to be determined, but he did show good track speed as just a freshman, including an 8:41 3K at the Oregon State meet last spring.

Raymon Ornelas (Corona, CA)

Not too far off fellow sophomore and Future Star Joaquin Martinez De Pinillos at Stanford this past weekend was Eleanor Roosevelt 10th grader Raymon Ornelas, who finished ninth in a 15:20 5K to cut 55-seconds off his time from a year prior. Ornelas’ finish was a 20-second PR and the fourth-fastest time run by a sophomore in 2015.

Trevor Foley (Brooksville, FL)

Hernando High sophomore Trevor Foley had never broken 16:00 in the 5K before September 19th, but now he’s done it two weeks in a row, highlighted by his 15:34 at the UF Mt. Dew Invitational. Not only has Foley cut 47-seconds off his PR this season, he’s also established himself as the top sophomore in the state of Florida.

Gabe Fendel (Fisher, IN)

Hamilton Southeastern High’s Gabe Fendel has been relatively quiet since his blistering 15:17 5K on September 12th, but he stays on our list this week because his time still stands as second-best for all 10th graders in 2015. Fendel’s last outing was a fourth place showing at the Flash Rock Invitational in 15:57, which doesn’t look great on paper until you realize that he ran 36-seconds faster in 2015 compared to last season.
