For The Inward Journey

The meaning of committment as a discipline of the spirit must take into account the mind and spirit cannot be seperated from the body in any absolute sense. It has been wisely said that the time and the place of man's life on earth is the time and the place of his body, but the meaning of his life is as significant and eternal as he wills to make it. Committment means that it is possible for a man to yield the nerve center of his consent to a purpose or cause, a movement or an ideal, which may be more important to him than whether he lives or dies. (Excerpt from Howard Thurman's For the Inward Journey, Committment)
As the season officially begins, and I have my first race, and first 800 meter win behind me (Modesto relays)I can start to really get ready for the outward and most impotantly The Inward Journey.
Competing is not just the physical, it is also mental. Sure, the body hurts when training, hurts when competing, hurts when sitting in ice baths but this is not all physical. It has been said that certain physical things are 90% mental and 10% physical. The exact numbers I do not know. I do know that whichever percentage the mind represents, it controls the percentage the body represents. The mind tells the body what to do and what not to do. Just like my hands or not just typing this message by themselves, the mind tells the body to act.
To compete at this level(and really at any level) takes a bit of committment. Sometimes the committment is the toughest part because you have to be committed even when you may not want to. Yet, that is what committment is about. If one stops doing something at the first sign of stress, then it is said, they are not committed. What is amazing, is that it is some what easy to be committed to something as big as making an Olympic team.
But, what is astounding is when I see individuals committed to supporting us that are trying to make the olympic team. The fans are committed to root, cheer, support, and be with us no matter what. I love the committment from the fans.
So as I continue to prepare for this goal of mine. I want all the fans to hold fast to their committments. Especially their committments to support all of the athletes trying to do amazing things.
I am committed to doing my best to realize my goal. I am committed to prepare myself FOR The Inward Journey. What are you committed to? Committment, Is it in you?
Before you answer that question, remember.......
