The IAAF announced seven countries who are now in talks of hosting the 2016 World Race Walking Team Championships and 2016 World Junior Championships.
The two world championship events were initially set to take place in the Russian cities of Cheboksary and Kazan. However after the full suspension of the Russian Member Federation ARAF, the IAAF opened up the bidding process. Below are the countries who submitted letters of interest.
2016 World Race Walking Team Championships
Guayaquil, Ecuador
Rome, Italy
Monterrey, Mexico
Kiev, Ukraine
2016 World Junior (U-20) Championships
Perth, Australia
India (City to be confirmed)
Bydgoszcz, Poland
IAAF President Seb Coe stated in the release: “The IAAF is extremely grateful to its Member Federations for their support. Reallocating the race walking team and the U20 championships is of vital importance. We are safeguarding the dreams and aspirations of athletes worldwide. Considering the necessary speed of the process, that seven Member Federations from five continental areas have formally expressed an interest in bidding is clear evidence that the events have appeal.”
The IAAF will hold conference calls with the interested nations tomorrow, accept full applications December 22 and come together for a vote on January 7.
