Florida distance runner Lauren Brasure was hospitalized after being struck by a car Wednesday night on West University Avenue in Gainesville. 

According to The Gainesville Sun who received a report from the police department, Brasure was hit by the vehicle around 10 p.m. and was still in the road and unconscious when officers arrived on the scene. 

She was immediately taken to UF Health Shands Hospital where she underwent emergency surgery for a head injury. No further information on her condition has been released at this time. 

The sophomore distance standout has been a top contributor for the Gators during the short period sheÂ’s been on campus. In her freshman cross country season, Brasure ran the fastest 5K in school history at the Mountain Dew Invitational (16:45), and went on to place 29th at the NCAA South Region Championships. 

On the track, Brasure collected a seventh-place finish in the 10K at the SEC Outdoor Championships and competed at the NCAA East Preliminary Championships in the same event.

Since the accident, an outcry of support has flooded social media channels in support of the Florida track runner making a speedy recovery.
