World champion and all-galaxy superstar Genzebe Dibaba will kick off her highly anticipated 2016 season in classic Dibaba fashion— by chasing a World record. Tomorrow in Stockholm the 25-year-old Ethiopian will target Doina Melinte’s 4:17.14 indoor mile record that has stood for 26 years.
Given that Dibaba is coming off a season where she broke a 22-year-old 1500m World record that had once seemed unattainable (in part because Qu Yunxia's 3:50.46 almost certainly had assistance) with her 3:50.07 in Monaco, and further stoked her mythical fire by closing the last 800m of the 1500m World Championship final in an earth-shattering 1:57, 4:17 is well within her reach.
For me, the question isn’t if, but by how much will Dibaba demolish this record.
Remember, the five-time World record holder has epic history on this Stockholm track, as she’s run her 3,000m (8:16.60) and 5,000m (14:18.86) records in consecutive years there. The last 1500m of that 3k record from two years ago was 4:04. That equates to 4:23 for a mile.
Again, 4:17 stands not a chance for survival. Now that we’ve reached that conclusion, let’s dig deeper— could Dibaba run the fastest mile in history— indoor or outdoor— tomorrow? Sounds crazy, but it’s worth a look.
The quickest mile ever run by a woman on this planet is Svetlana Masterkova’s 4:12.56 from 1996. This was of course run on an outdoor track and is probably out of reach for Dibaba on a 200m oval, but is it though? Oh my god, remember that workout she did before Worlds?!
Calm down, Lincoln, calm down.
Dibaba's pursuit of 4:17.14 goes off tomorrow at 2:35 pm CT.
Tomorrow Dibaba will attempt to break the indoor mile world record.
