Genzebe Dibaba officially owns five world indoor records as the 1500m World Champion ran 4:13.31 in the mile at Stockholm’s Globen Galan on Wednesday.
Dibaba’s performance broke the previous indoor world record of 4:17.14 and came within a second of breaking the outdoor and all-time record of 4:12.56 set by Svetlana Masterkova in 1996. The Ethiopian already owned the world indoor 1500m record when she ran 3:55.17 in Karlsruhe two years ago. Dibaba also set world indoor records for the 3000m and 5000m at the past two meetings in Stockholm.
The pace at the Globen Galan was set almost perfectly as Dibaba ran the first 200m in 31 seconds behind the pacer who brought her into the 400m in 63 seconds and then the 600m mark in 1:34.98. Dibaba was brought into the 800m in 2:06.69, over a second slower than the outdoor mile world record pace of 4:12. She rolled into the 1000m mark in 2:38.84 and then the 1200m mark in 3:10.77. The final 400m of the race was an all-out grind as Dibaba closed in 62.54 for the victory.
Watch her historic performance below:
The 25-year-old made her intentions known prior to the IAAF indoor meeting when she told the media that she was targeting Doina Melinte’s 26-year-old record and the published paces showed her intent of breaking the all-time mile record. Given Dibaba’s historic 2015 season when she broke the 22-year-old 1500m world record, we predicted that the indoor mile world record was in serious jeopardy.
Our prediction came true as Dibaba not only broke the long-standing indoor mile world record but also nearly broke the blazing fast outdoor world record mark.
Dibaba broke the 1500m world record by running 3:50.07 at the Monaco Diamond League meeting last July. She split a jaw-dropping 2:01 for the final 800m on her way to breaking the previous world record of 3:50.46 set by China’s Qu Yunxia in 1993. The Ethiopian returned in August to claim the World Championship title in Beijing where she ran a 1:57 final 800m to win the 1500m championship, her first outdoor World title.
