Men's 800 Final: Quick Takes and Picks
The men's 800m rounds have been carnage--an Olympic-quality trio of Duane Solomon, Donavan Brazier, and Nick Symmonds didn't even make it to the semis. Below, we break down what will happen in tonight's Olympic Trials final. It's at 5:51 Pacific/8:51 Eastern.

Taylor Dutch: Despite enduring a roller coaster few months with the Nike lawsuit, Boris Berian has truly impressed me with his composure under rocky circumstances. Last year, the Big Bear Track Club athlete didn’t even advance to the final of USAs, but 2016 Boris is a completely different athlete and should be considered a lock for this final.

Clayton Murphy has been racing like an athlete beyond his years and has shown his finesse when it comes to running rounds. Winning an NCAA title was no problem for him, and Clayton is going to carry that momentum all the way to the podium.

Erik Sowinski, aka the master of nabbing a 2-3 team spot, is also looking strong heading into this final after finishing a safe second in each previous heat. As he’s shown numerous times before, Sowinski should be in perfect position to make this Olympic team.

Meg Bellino: Free man Boris Berian and straight outta Akron NCAA champ Clayton Murphy WILL make this team. But who will take the third spot? This race will be brutal. As of now (12:30PM PST), the final commence in two alleys, six athletes on the inside and three on the outside lanes due to the nature of the nine man final. Who does this benefit? Berian will certainly take the race out like a mad man, per usual. Murphy will position himself toward the front of the pack and make moves at the perfect time (I swear the 21-year-old races like a seasoned vet. He’s outstanding.). By not starting in individual lanes, the first 100m will most certainly be dramatic, and someone like Erik Sowinski, second in 2015 and bronze at world indoors, has the experience and credentials to navigate through this and finish third.

Dennis Young: We all picked Berian, Murphy, and Sowinski to make the team in some order. In a laned race, that'd be a near-lock. But if the race is run in a waterfall, then some weirdness could ensue. The race could go out way too hot as pure mid-d guys like Berian, Loxsom, Harris, and Jock try to get clear of the field. Or it could be a traffic jam and go out way too slow. I still think Berian, Murphy, and Sowinski will outclass the field, but if there's chicanery, I like Isaiah Harris. The Penn State freshman is running loose and free of expectations.
