The Entire 2017 Diamond League Will Be Decided At The Finals
The Diamond League announced on Wednesday that it is introducing a championship-style model for 2017.
The 2017 IAAF Diamond League--the premier professional track and field circuit--is going to look a lot different next year.
A championship-style model will be introduced in 2017 with finalists in each 32 events vying for a prize pool of $3.2 million, including $50,000 for each winner, the Diamond League announced Wednesday.
The past model was designed so that the athletes who accumulated the most points at the end of the circuit were the winners, regardless if they actually won the final Diamond League contest or not.
In 2017, athletes must earn points in the first 12 Diamond League competitions to qualify for the final two meetings.
"After seven seasons which have established the IAAF Diamond League as our premier circuit it is important to assess its impact and build for the future," IAAF president Sebastian Coe said in a press release. "These decisions are the first step to growing the attractiveness of the series."
Winners of each event in the circuit finals will be awarded $50,000, with the rest of the prize money distributed as such:
1st: $50,000
2nd: $20,000
3rd: $10,000
4th: $6,000
5th: $5,000
6th: $4,000
7th: $3,000
8th: $2,000
Also new to 2017, athletes in the horizontal jumps and throwing events will be given six attempts each, a change from the three attempts plus three final attempts experiment that took place in 2016.
