Cooper Teare is inching closer to breaking the four minute mile barrier. On Friday night, he cracked the list of the top 10 fastest high school milers in history when he ran 4:00.16 to win the Mt. SAC Relays invitational mile.

The senior from St. Joseph Notre Dame came incredibly close to breaking four minutes, but barely missed the mark when he commanded the race in Torrance, Calif. Teare was paced through 800m in 2:00.4 and closed in a blazing final 400m (58.5) in an attempt to dip under the goal time. His performance ranks No. 1 in the country among high school competition.

The mile follows a standout run at the Arcadia Invitational last week where Teare broke the 3200m meet record with a stunning 8:41.46 victory. Prior to Arcadia, Teare notched a 5K personal best of 14:13.26 to win the Texas Distance Festival.

Teare plans to compete for Oregon in the fall.
