The first round of the women's 1500m kicked off the first day of competition at the IAAF World Championships Friday in London. World record-holder Genzebe Dibaba ran the fastest time of the day with a 4:02.67 victory out of heat one. She was followed by 800m Olympic champion Caster Semenya who finished second in 4:02.84.
All three American runners advanced to the semifinal round out of their respective heats. Olympic bronze medalist Jenny Simpson finished second in heat two. Kate Grace finished seventh in heat one, and Sara Vaughn finished eighth in heat three. Vaughn's 4:04.56 performance lowered her lifetime best by two seconds.
The 1500m semifinal will take place on Saturday at 1:35 p.m. CT.
