WATCH: Caster Semenya & Ajee Wilson Both Break The 600m WR!
Today at the Internationale Stadionfest (ISTAF) in Berlin, Germany, Caster Semenya of South Africa and Ajee Wilson of the United States both shattered the 600m world record, previously set 20 years ago at 1:22.63 by Ana Fidelia Quirot of Cuba.
Semenya, the newly crowned IAAF world champion for 800m, sprinted to a new record of 1:21.77 while Wilson, the world bronze medalist, ran 1:22.39.
Semenya started so fast that the pacer couldn't even get to her proper position in front. She split about 25.5 for the opening 200m.
Wilson maintained second position for the entire race and finished ahead of Francine Niyonsaba of Burundi, the world silver medalist over 800m. Berlin marks Wilson's first career win over Niyonsaba. Her time broke the American record of 1:23.59, set by Alysia Montaño in 2013.
