Top Events To Watch At The 2018 Dartmouth Relays

The Dartmouth Relays was one of the top indoor meets in the Northeast a year ago, featuring over 600 elite performances, including performances from the likes of Sammy Watson, DJ Principe, and Leya Salis

Once again, the event will be LIVE on FloTrack.

You can watch it here.

What will 2018 bring?

Some of the loaded events -- much like a year ago -- are in the middle distance, where talents from Connecticut, New Hampshire, and Rhode Island are bringing some heavy competition to the Leverone Field House at Dartmouth College.

Boys 1 Mile

One of the more interesting events at Dartmouth will be the boys 1-mile run, featuring the likes of Drew Thompson, Joe Dos Reis, Max DiMuccio, and defending champion Alexander Korczynski.

Thompson, a senior from Fairfield (CT) High who's committed to Dartmouth, is a little less than two months off his eighth-place performance at Foot Locker Nationals, where he ran 15:43.70 at Balboa Park. But winter track is a different animal, and Thompson is likely eyeing a different goal.

Two weeks ago, he ran 4:23.84 in the full mile at the Boston Holiday Challenge, but look for Thompson to push for a time under 4:20 along with Dos Reis and DiMuccio, teammates at La Salle Academy (RI).

A year ago, Korczynski won the event in 4:19.18, though Dos Reis, who was injured for part of the cross country season, also comes in with a PR at 4:19.04. DiMuccio will look to improve on his 4:25.65 from last season as well.

Girls 2 Mile

This is arguably the most competitive -- and deepest -- event at Dartmouth, featuring a host of contenders, including one coming off a top-five performance at Foot Locker Nationals. That would be Exeter (NH) High senior Jacqueline Gaughan, a Notre Dame signee looking to transition her aerobic fitness to the track, where a year ago she went 10:24.32 at New Balance Nationals Indoor.

She'll certainly have some competition, including La Salle Academy (RI) senior Grace Connolly, Bishop Guertin (NH) High sophomore Caroline Fischer, and Niskayuna (NY) High's Abigail Spiers.

Connolly, in particular, had a pretty good cross country season that featured a PR of 17:47.20 at Great American. She went a season-best 10:44.36 last year at the New England Indoor Championships, while Fischer had an up-and-down fall but comes in with a 2-mile PR of 10:41.29.

Spiers shouldn't be overlooked, either. She went 10:16.30 for 3K at the Yale Track Classic a year ago and hit a 4K PR of 14:51.40 at the Manhattan Invitational this fall.

Girls 1 Mile

This race features talented Manchester West (NH) High junior Julia Robitaille, who finished 13th at Nike Cross Nationals and was second overall at the New Hampshire Meet of Champions in a PB of 17:05.60. While this year was her breakout cross country campaign, Robitaille's track times are solid, too.

Over last year's indoor season, she went 4:49.34 in the 1500m and 10:29.45 in the 3000m. Though Robitaille has already made some improvements indoors, going 2:57.47 in the 1000m and 10:07.53 in the 1000m.

She'll likely be looking to dip below 5:00 at Dartmouth.

Other Events To Watch

Boys Long Jump

Milton (MA) High's Smith Charles enters the long jump with a best of 23-2 indoors, though he's gone 23-6.75 outdoors. The current national leader is Potomac (VA) High's Donovan Louis, who's gone 23-7.

Shot Put

Innovation Academy's Aiden Felty is the No. 1-ranked competitor in the shot put. Felty has been on fire this season. Last week at the Boston Holiday Challenge he tossed the metal ball a PR of 57 feet, 4.75 inches. Previously this season, he had a four-inch best of 55-5 at the Winter Festival on December 16. - Stephen Mazzone

400m

Milton Elise O'Leary is one of the top seeds in the 400m dash. She has an outdoor best of 56.64, which she did to finish second at the all-state meet in June. Last year she also did 57 seconds for her leg on a 4x400m squad on the indoor surface. - Stephen Mazzone

1000m

Bridget Mitchell of Milton is entered in the 1,000m and the mile; she ranks among the best in both events. Mitchell was second in the mile at last year's meet, clocking 5:01. She brings a top time of 4:56.06. In the 1K, Mitchell has a PB of 2:54.31. She could challenge the meet record in that event. in 2016, Leya Salis of Bedford (NH) set the current mark of 2:53.25. - Stephen Mazzone

DMR and 4x800

The boys 4x800 should be a super competitive race between Bishop Hendricken (RI), which qualified for NXN, and La Salle Academy, which traditionally features some quality distance talents. La Salle Academy should also be a team to watch in the boys DMR.
