An armed robber opened gunfire on British sprinter Zharnel Hughes last night while the 200m specialist was training at the University of the West Indies Usain Bolt Track in Kingston, Jamaica.

Hughes was putting on his sneakers when the gunman approached him, he told the Jamaica Gleaner.

“I was putting on my sneakers at my trunk and this guy just came up pointing a gun in my face. He asked me for my phone and I ran off and the guy opened fire,” Hughes said.

A university official and licensed gun owner who happened to be on the scene reportedly returned fire.

No one was injured and Hughes filed a police report.

The 22-year-old has trained with Usain Bolt's group — which also includes Yohan Blake — for the past few years before the world record holder's retirement this summer.

Hughes was fifth in the 200m at the IAAF World Championships in 2015 as a 20-year-old but missed the Rio Olympics due to injury. He advanced to the semifinal round of the 200m at the world championships in London this past summer.

He was born in Anguilla and holds dual citizenship with Great Britain and Jamaica.
