USATF Women's 800m Preview: Which Stud Will Get Left At Home?

The IAAF World Indoor Championships only take two athletes per event from each country, instead of three like the outdoor event. This is particularly cruel for the U.S. women's 800m, as the "Big Three" of Ajee' Wilson, Charlene Lipsey, and Raevyn Rogers appear to be the most qualified to represent the country heading into the USATF Indoors in Albuquerque, New Mexico, this weekend.

Prelim: Saturday, 2:53 PM MT
Final: Sunday, 3:24 PM MT

Wilson, the American outdoor record holder (and briefly, the indoor record holder), is the clear favorite for gold — and possibly, even gold at World Indoors. She is the undisputed queen of the American 800m and has racked up a world bronze (2017) and world silver (2016) medals. Her 2:00.90 season best is the third-best time in the world this year, and she anchored Team USA's world record-setting 4x800m relay with a solo 1:58 split at the Millrose Games.

She'll be racing all three of her teammates from the record run: the 2017 world finalist Lipsey, collegiate record holder Raevyn Rogers, and 2016 Olympian Chrishuna Williams.

Wilson, Lipsey, and Rogers are all coached by Derek Thompson, though Rogers still lives in Eugene, OR, while finishing her college degree this year.

The choice for the No. 2 spot behind Wilson is tough to make between Rogers and Lipsey, who rank No. 2 and No. 3, respectively, in the U.S. this year with season-best marks of 2:01.73 and 2:02.05. Lipsey has more international experience after competing at the IAAF World Relays and IAAF World Championships and throughout Europe last summer (plus she won the USATF Indoor 1K title last year), though Rogers defeated Lipsey head-to-head at the New Balance Indoor Grand Prix last weekend.

We're gonna go with the young Duck for this one, but trust it will be close.

Prediction: 1. Ajee' Wilson 2. Raevyn Rogers
