COLLEGE STATION, TEXAS (09-March) -- The top six men's qualifiers and four of the top five women's qualifiers to the NCAA 60m final tomorrow either improved or tied their season's bests in the prelims today.

Aleia Hobbs of LSU surpassed her teammate Mikiah Brisco, the NCAA leader and second-fastest performer in collegiate history, as the probable favorite for the crown by clocking the fastest qualifying time of 7.12.

Brisco, meanwhile, who earned her first NCAA title last year in the 100m, nearly missed out on qualifying altogether by finishing fourth in her heat in 7.21. The senior has run 7.08 this year.

Jonielle Smith of Auburn posted the second-fastest qualifying time of 7.15 to win heat one.

Kate Hall of Georgia is a notable advancer to tomorrow's final, as the Bulldogs are favored for the team title, and Hall was not projected to score any points in the event.

The biggest casualty of the preliminary round was Florida State's Andre Ewers, the No. 1-ranked man in the NCAA this year per his season's best of 6.52, who false-started and was removed from heat two.

Auburn sophomore Raheem Chambers led qualifiers with a PB of 6.56, his first time breaking the 6.60 barrier. Elijah Hall of Houston ran an identical time to win section one, though Chambers boasted a quicker reaction time to win section two.

Jaylen Mitchell of North Carolina A&T and Demek Kemp of South Carolina State also ran under 6.60.

Jaylen Bacon of Arkansas, the top returner to NCAAs after placing third last year, was the final man to advance in 6.65.
